So how did your Christmas turn out? Was Santa Good?
Comments (22)Santa was so good, I/we feel a little guilty. MIL buys us literally a carload of gifts. Most of the stuff is wonderful and we are appreciative, but there are a couple of things we don't know where we are going to put them, and they're really not our style. They're from ebay, so they're really not returnable. We have asked her to please cut back, but that hasn't worked. She buys items throughout the year. OTOH, new fun things: Digital remote meat thermometer. I opened it early so we could grill the tenderloin. Yes, I asked for a new meat thermometer, LOL. Some iPhone accessories: a cassette adapter so I can broadcast through the speakers in my older Mustang and listen to the Sirius. His friend has this, and it works really well. It's called iDeck. It's also a hands-free phone device, so very useful. He also got me an armband so I can use it for exercise. The "big" gift was a Kitchenaid mixer in Ice color. It was between the Ice and Cobalt blues, but Ice seems to be the better color. He is interested in using the meat grinder and sausage stuffer, so it's more of a gift for us than for me alone. I don't mind getting kitchen/cooking related things for Christmas since I enjoy cooking. MIL got me the new Bobby Flay cookbook, and someone on the kitchens forum said to try the carmelized onion pizza. I can make the dough in the new mixer....See MoreChanging Our Vision 180
Comments (19)Liriodendron, the house view with the new windows has been approved by our HOA and looks fine (actually give the huge wall a visual break). We kept the window line the same as the laundry room and dinette windows on the west side. Willaimsem. We thought of having that too but it feels a tad lopsided (could be that we've looked at it too long with symmetry). Another reason I like that layout is the fridge is close to the dinette where we eat on a daily basis and is the quickest route from the great room. It would also keep the dirty dishes on the south part of the island, somewhat less noticeable from the front door. Greenhousems. When my DH grimaces when I do a 180 turn, I feel guilty. Him and everyone else around me, is tired of showing a new and improved planned and just want to start. He does most of the cooking though I would and have started to cook more. I took forever planning the backyard patios. My DH was fine with just about anything. When I finally came up with the plan I knew it immediately. It's that nagging voice that keeps me from jumping in with both feet. I don't think any designer would have the patience for me (I don't have the patience for me LOL....See Morefrustrated with how the kitchen is turning out and oak bashing
Comments (71)I have bashed my previous kitchens' oak cabinets but only because they were the awful pickled kind (not put in by us!). In our first kitchen, I liked everything but the finish on our cabs. The layout was nice, the size was good and even the seafoam green laminate did not bother me. I love the size and amount of the cabs. Dh liked the house instantly because of the cathedral ceilings, skylights, open layout, etc... I liked everything but the kitchen cabs and knew they were in too good of shape to justify taking them out. So, I dealt with them for 7 years and would probably still be dealing with them now 6 years later. In our current house, the pickled oak cabs were small, the surface was wearing poorly, the layout was wrong and there were no pullouts or anything functional about them. When the pickled finish starts to wear on oak, it is a sorry sight to see. Other materials develop patina and character, while pickled oak looks diseased with age. I have seen nice kitchens done with oak and may even consider one someday if we were to move (God forbid, after all the effort put in here, lol). I have also seen ones done poorly and done as the cliche of "builder's oak". I also feel that way about some of the new materials that all builders in our area are using (and I do mean "all"). Those kitchens look alike and all are brown wood with beige tumbled travertine, St Cecilia granite or similar, Tuscan type accents and a yellow/gold wall paint. In a few years, people around here will be bashing the heck out of those. Remember the laminate cabs with the oak strip on the bottom? They went from fabulous to hideous pretty quickly in popular opinion from the 80s to the 90s. See anyone using them lately? Oak just needs some time until it becomes retro enough to be cool. Most things come back in time. Just be patient, and you will be ahead of the curve again ;)...See MoreWhere to put our front door? Bring me your vision!
Comments (20)Actually the new master was a garage originally. Then turned into a unfinished hard-to-access room and the carport isnt original. We had two designers and an engineer come up with the interior master plan. It's going to be an amazing master and we're really excited! The front door is where it has always been! The front room has an amazing view, more spectacular then the pool....See Morejoaniepoanie
