When plans go awry...
Had a good time at the Ocala Spring Festival. I went with a limited
budget, telling myself that I wasn't going to spend much and the money I
did spend would be those 'Wow' plants that just stand on their own.
And I did fairly well for a while, helping my mother pick out plants for
her butterfly garden more than anything. Then I got to one stand and
saw Liatris for sale and thought, "Ooh, Liatris. I keep failing on
getting those started from seed, I'll get those." Then I passed another
booth which had some interesting Coleus, "Hmm, that will be easy to
propagate and I can border my lanai with it." As I rounded another
lane, I found Purple Brazilian Salvia and again my mind went to easily
propagating to fill in another section of the yard. I realized that I
was getting close to my budget and still hadn't gotten one particularly
'Wow' plant. So I put a lock on my wallet and wandered the vendors,
returning to a few repeatedly and making a mental and then paper list of
the plants I had to choose from. Heliconias, Alocasias, Butterfly
Gingers, Bamboo, Cordylines. They were all spinning in my head and
jostling for position as THE plant I was going to get. So what did I
finally settle on? A nice-sized Tea Olive. While not visually
spectacular in any regard, it seemed there was not a corner of the fair
that I wasn't smelling it, with possible exception being around the food
vendors. So my 'Wow' plant is one that instead of seeing it, you can
smell it on the breeze and just go, 'Wow'...

Comments (7)When you say that you watered it a lot, that could be a possible problem. Slow, deep watering only when needed is much better than quick, shallow, frequent watering. Check the soil before you water to make sure water is needed. The top of you soil should dry out between watering but the soil down 1 to 2 inches should not be allowed to dry out. You can poke a finger down into the dirt to check for moisture. Also, check the rootball and surrounding soil. If the soil in the rootball is different than the surrounding soil, this can cause the rootball to dry out before the surrounding area or stay soggy while surrounding soil drains. This is one reason amending the soil when planting trees and shrubs is not longer recommended. If you think the shrub is suffering from transplant shock, you could rig us some way to shade it. Providing shade from direct full sun could make a big difference if it's not too late. Comments (19)The doors/windows in the inspiration pic are a custom set of 4 patio doors mulled together with only the 2 inner ones operating all from the same manufacturer--likely a Pella, Jeld-Wen, Andersen or Marvin. We had something similar specced at one time and the cost was $3-4K with grids between the glass if I remember correctly. The cost skyrockets from there if you want simulated or true divided lites/grids. It is not easy to duplicate the look in the inspiration pic when you're using components from different manufacturers and mixing & matching windows and doors to get the effect you want. What you have appears to be the standard box store style patio door set with a transom mulled above flanked by 2 double hung windows. The problem with these style doors is that they will not look flush like the windows as the glass is held in by a chunky plastic frame that screws in place on the inside and outside of the door. The window will never have that look. You can get closer to the look in your pic by using flush glazed patio doors which more closely resemble the window design for uniformity. Changing the side windows to non-operational windows will also help achieve a cohesive look with the glass in the doors. If you need to use the pics in the thread to explain anything to the builder, you are more than welcome to do so. No matter which way you go, make sure the glass sizes match up in the transoms across the entire wall and not just the height of the overall transom. (you'll see in the link what I mean). Comments (19)They are too assymetrical for leaving exposed. Not even close. Just ugly. Far from what I'd describe as "workmanlike". More like "jerkmanlike". Good ideas so far, but on thing I'd do is exchange the current vertical tailpiece on each drain for an offset tailpiece. An offset tailpiece will take a 90-degree turn right under the sink drain and head towards the back wall. Once closer to the back wall, you can drop it back down vertically into the P trap and out the drain line through the wall. That will get the P trap tight against the back wall. With the P-trap tight against the back wall, then you can add your recessed fabric curtain or your recessed panel to cover the P trap assembly. That'll allow you to still have open access under the sinks if that's your goal. I'd at least have them do the offset tailpiece in chrome as part of it might be visible before it runs behind the curtain....See MoreA trip gone awry or 'Elery saves vacation'
