Dunn Edwards Bone vs Bone White

Is there a significant difference between Dunn Edwards Bone and Bone White paint colors? They look so similar on the computer screen and both have an LRV of 69. Do you think either of these colors will be acceptable and not outdated in 10 years? It used to be that Swiss Coffee was the neutral color of paint for a house's interior, but now it seems like colors like Bone and grays are the new white or neutral. Do you all think that a Bone color would look better juxtaposed to Swiss Coffee doors, moulding and baseboard vs a light gray?

I’m thinking about DE Bone white for my entire house. My kitchen is Taj Mahal countertops, White Dove BM cabinets, medium wood floors and back splash is a taupe subway tile. Looking for a neutral paint color since I have a late 80’s house and none of my rooms are closed off.

When looking at the Munsell notations, the Hue for DEC741 Bone White is .62Y so it's a little less yellow than DEC765 Bone, which is 1.38Y. They both have the same Value at 8.5 and just a slight difference in Chroma at 1.3 vs 1.2.

Because they are both off-whites with the slightest variation, we suggest looking at the general appearance of the color. Bone White looks a bit brighter on the chip, however, we recommend purchasing samples and testing both on the walls to see how these neutrals react with the colors around them. Don't feel you need to encourage Ideasshare! S/he is a crazy Chinese photoshopper.who unfortunately is often the first to reply to posts. I think you're running into the classic conundrum between gardening and landscaping. In landscaping, the plants fulfill a specific function according to their size, shape, colour, foliage, etc. They are there for some purpose related to how the house looks, where you want privacy, etc. Landscaping is a big picture exercise where plant details don't matter much. Gardening is where ypu nurture and enjoy plants for their own sakes, and for the sake of their details, which may be seasonal or otherwise fleeting - not for the sake of the overall impression that the plant collection will make. So I think you're expressing frustration at having put in a garden but still having no landscaping. Attention to hardscape is often the key to making a garden work as a big picture attribute, and what you've done in that regard is helping a lot here. Your beds are nicely shaped and clearly defined, your paths are wide and have a distinct presence. From there, the decision to add evergreen "bones" should really depend on what is important to you about the space. Most people like an evergreen landscape installation on the public side, and don't mind having bare beds in winter because they enjoy watching their plants emerge and thrive in spring and summer. Certainly if you add evergreens to your beds you should do it with a view to how they will look when everything else has died down... mixing evergreens and perennials is not always an unmitigated success. I mean, think about it, what pleasure do you get out of a juniper in a bed in the back yard all by its lonesome in November? In other words, out there, what's the point? But if that's what you want to do, I would suggest you actually forget about the perennials you have in so far and just do a nice arrangement of evergreens, so that you're happy when the perennials die down and let the evergreens shine. But there is something to be said for having separate landscaping beds where landscaping matters, and garden beds that you know will die down in winter but look great when you spend time outdoors. I mean, again, how exciting is it to sit next to a yew on the patio in summer? You want something that is exciting to look at up close. I hope that will help you figure out what type of plant you might want to put where. KarinL

When we converted our garage into another bed/bath/office, we added vegas - large wooden beams - out the NW side of the building, over what had been broken rock and a bit of patchy sod. So we dug all that sod out, leveled it, brought in RR ties to make a rectangle incorporating the standing posts for the vegas, mechanically tamped down the soil, and put 4" of sand on top. 15 x 30. A concrete batch plant south of town were selling 2' x 2' pavers with a 1/4 inch sunburst pattern. So I ordered enough of them to fill the space, and they finally were ready. Eh-boy. There weren't two the same thickness, so each one had to be hand leveled to the surrounding ones. It took days to lay what should have been 2 hours tops. But still, it was beautiful with big 4' squares of sunburst. Then, the a couple of years later, the water main under all this developed a split, and started washing away a big hole about 4 foot down, but we didn't know it until i got the water bill which was $200 more than the usual $25. So got all that fixed, and as you can imagine, the thing was never level again. And then, it turns out that if you add red dye to batch concrete, it won't hold up to freeze thaw cycles, and they started to turn to sand and gravel. The batch plant gave me half a dozen for free. I've finished those now, and I'm really not looking forward to seeing whats under all that snow.... Some day, I'll replace all that with those hook together things made out of recycled tires. In the mean time, we stuck some cattle panels over the top of the vegas and grow grape vines up there, planted climbing roses at all the posts, and the shade knocks 10Âº off the inside house temperature in the middle of the summer. I take naps survey the garden and make long term plans in a chair there too.

I wouldn't assume one is "brighter" than the other strictly based on the LRV measurement/number. "Brighter" speaks to a different *part* of color. Brighter, dulled, vivid, grayed speaks to intensity or saturation. Also, sometimes people refer to this part of color as chromaticity or just chroma. LRV is all about how much light is reflected or absorbed. Muslin and Bone White are super close in LRV - close and both are light colors. A LRV spread of five or six isn't going to make that much of a difference -- on average and for most general purposes -- that narrow of a spread isn't something that should matter when it comes to making a color decision.

I painted my cabinets last summer, my house faces south, so I get lots of sun too. I got samples of White Dove and 3 others that I cannot recall (probably what you mentioned or close). I did not like White Dove on the swatch at all, but I kept an open mind. I painted all 4 on poster boards and looked at them for a few days and did a process of elimination. White Dove won! I LOVE the way my cabinets look.....white without being stark, but no undertones. I used Cabinet Coat paint from BM and they tinted it White Dove for me. Hope that helps....

Actually I tried bone white Dunn Edwards and it was actually too light for my walls. So I guess I’m still in search of a neutral color. Waiting for my countertops to go in first so I have a better vision. Thank you for your help greatly appreciated.

Since it's impossible to make colors look like they do in real life on a monitor/device, that's not the best way to shop for and compare paint colors

Wow. Not sure I've seen two paint colors SO similar - and both from the same brand.

In terms of Value and Light Reflectance Value, they are the same. No difference in luminance - perceived or measured.

Where they differ is Hue Family and Chroma.

You can see by comparing the Colorographies that Bone White is closer to the YR (yellow-red) hue family -AND- it has a tiny tick more Chroma.

As a result, Bone appears as a more neutral color - because it has less Chroma and it is literally closer to a neutral gray.

The slight difference in hue is also noticeable.

As the hue notation indicates, Bone White is closer to the Yellow-Red hue family and so it looks more peachy, can see orange overtones.

Because it is literally closer to the Yellow-Red (orange) hue family.

Bone is farther away from the Yellow-Red (orange) hue family, closer to the middle of the yellow hue family so it doesn't look as peachy as Bone White.

Again, Bone is the more neutral color of the two.

Bone has more longevity than Bone White because it's more neutral.

Yes. It's very pretty with DE's Swiss Coffee.

We know it works because Bone has more Chroma than Swiss Coffee.

You always want your wall color to have MORE Chroma than your white/off-white trim color.

Because the white/off-white trim will not look dirty juxtaposed to the wall color. Or in other words, the wall color with more Chroma won't make the trim look like a dirty color of white.

Note that Bone and Swiss Coffee have different Chroma scales.

That's because of the difference in hue family notations.

Different hue families reach maximum, full Chroma at different rates.

The Chroma scales on the Colorographies reflect that as accurately as possible.
