Hibiscus plant has brown growths on stem

So, I believe this is a hibiscus plant, although it came as a seed and I've yet to see it blossom. It is an indoor plant and it has developed some kind of mottled brown lumps on the stem. These peel off without much force and the stem looks fine underneath. What are these things? Any input would be appreciated. Btw I live on the oregon coast, in case that helps identification.

Those small lumps are scale, sucking pests which can be challenging to eradicate. These small pests gradually weaken the plant by sucking on vital plant juices.

I don't know what your plant is but it appears to need more light.

indoor hibicus???? .. well.. there are so many H.. i am sure there are houseplant versions ... but i cant ID on these pix ...

peeling them off is good enough.. if you can get them all ...

they hatched last spring... to be that size already ... ?????

your plant is incredibly stressed... you might try the NAME THAT PLANT FORUM to perfect the ID ... and follow thru to the next forum.. for info on how to grow it better.. to reduce stress ..

if that big plant is growing in that small cell pack... you can do better ...

Oh my, serious scale on the stem. Begin by scraping it off; may be as easy a using a rag or paper towel and wipe vigorously. Then you can deal more easily with the scale that remain. Uncertain that the brown leaves are due to the same thing. Even so, take a close look at the undersides of the leaves.

No, it's not a combo. It's one plant, that I divided into two smaller, more manageable ones. I've owned it over twenty years. Plus, the bright red tubular flowers it had the first year tells me it probably isn't a philodendron. But I hear you, if you look at Lipstick plant leaves, they're spaced closer. These have gradually "stretched out" and increased in size over these many years. Here's a photo of the 'sister' plant (the one I got when I separated the two)

I don't know if this debunks the belief that I need two tomatillo plants to get fruit, but just yesterday as I was taking a cutting from the tomatillo plant, I noticed a fruit. An actual tomatillo deep within the foliage! And a short while later, another one. So these two could simply be freaks of nature… or the pollinators brought pollen from some far away tomatillo plant, or it pollenated from the same plant. Who knows. But when I declared to my partner that the plant finally actually fruited, the response I got was "Well, in the plant's defense, we were expecting bell peppers"

thanks for your input! had no idea that's what scale looked like at that size...looks more like a viral/bacterial growth. gonna cut off most of the offending vines and break out the neem.

You'll never see the hibiscus bloom inside.

I'd examine all of your other plants for scale, spider mites, and other pests. By the way, there are many hundred of species of scale insects, each unique from the other.
