Do you keep your counters completely clear?
Comments (77)My main prep space is a 30" stretch of counter between the cooktop and the sink. Once I start working in earnest, I don't like to have to move far from that spot, just shift over a step to sink or stove. Always out is a cutting board (14" x 18"), held steady by a piece of that foam-fabric shelf liner stuff. Always lined up against the wall in front of me: - utensil crock [most-used utensils only] - bottle of olive oil - salt dish - pepper mill - butter bell - small utensil crock [measuring spoons, peeler, scissors] Between the cutting board and the line-up, there's a spoon rest. My motto is "be ready to cook". Nothing is out on that counter that isn't used daily, often several times a day. There's plenty to get out when preparing food without also having to get out the "infrastructure" every time. When I need something while prepping and cooking, I either reach for it right in front of me, or get it from the assembled ingredients behind me on the worktable [I'm pretty much of a "mise en place" cook]. The less-often-used utensils are all in the top drawer under the stove, in one layer, viewable and reachable at a glance. I hate riffling! It helps that I don't have many electric appliances; the immersion blender and coffee grinder are in cabinets, the little toaster and small microwave are on the worktable with a bowl of onions and garlic. The induction unit lives on a cookie sheet covering a rear burner on the gas stove, leaving three gas burners free -- a dirt-cheap way to get a "hybrid" cooktop....See MoreWhere do you store your bread?
Comments (18)I store our bread in a "regular" drawer...the bottom drawer in our 4-drawer base. It keeps longer there than it did in the pantry in our old kitchen. I had originally planned on a a "bread insert" in one of the 3-drawer bases, but when we started cutting costs we cut it...and saved over $300. In the regular door, the bread rarely goes bad b/f we use it up. We're a family of 4 (two teens), but I don't eat bread as I have Celiac Disease. (If bread is on sale & I buy several loaves, I double bag the extra loaves & store them in the freezer. My gluten-free bread is stored in the freezer since I don't eat it that quickly.) I learned long ago, btw, that bread goes stale when stored in the refrigerator unless used up in a day or two...but if you use it up that quickly you don't need to store it in the refrigerator!...See MoreWhere do you store your bread?
Comments (14)Thank you all the the good ideas. The only bread items i keep in the frig are things I'm going to toast, like bagels or english muffins. Otherwise I find it affects the texture. I never freeze bread, it doesn't last long enough! Homemade bread and muffins always disappear on the same day they are baked. My kids are 7, 10 and 13. They can all make there own PBJ, toast, or "easy grilled cheese", and cook hot dogs ot tortilla and cheese in the MW. I find that they are happier when they can do these things on their own. I like the idea of a sandwich station too. I'll need to rethink where I put things like the toaster and the trash. Between the frig and sink I have a 32" = 34" cabinet. I wanted to put in 3 drawers there for food storage, wraps and tupperware, towels, one shallow drawer for knives. The MW will be on a shelf immediate above this counter. This is the counter where I make sandwiches now. It currently has an old-fashion pull out wood cutting board that I use exclusively for making sandwiches or slicing bread. I was thinking of getting rid of the cutting board in the remodel, but maybe I should keep it? I guess I could move the toaster to this counter too, though it will steal some work space. If I make one drawer for bread, I'll have to find somewhere else to put my dish towels. I'm glad you told me not to waste money on the "bread drawer" thing with lid. I was also thinking of using some of that 34" width to put in a pull-out trash (between sink and new drawers. If I do that, then I'll want to keep the trash pull-out as narrow as possible, and the drawers as wide as possible. I also have a narrow 14", floor to ceiling cabinet with pull outs on the other side of the frig. I could put the trash pull-out there. It won't be as convenient as next to the sink, but maybe a better compromise location. I didn't like the idea of the trash immediately next to the bread drawer anyway. On the other side of the sink I have the DW and then another 15 - 18" for a cabinet or drawers. Over there I thought I'd keep my big mixer, mixing bowl, and other appliances like blender and food processor. I think cabinet with pull-outs would be better for this. We have limited space in our kitchen that led to us having a bank of 12" deep drawers - I was worried they wouldn't be very usable, but one of 'em is PERFECT for a loaf of bread with room for a hotdog/hamburger buns, too. This was strange, we just went on vacation and a friend was house/dog-sitting for us, and right before I left, I had picked up a few potatoes - 3 or 4 in bulk in the plastic bag that's in the produce section, you know? Anyway, I stuck them in the bread drawer and while we were on vacation, our friend found that the potatoes had gone bad, like, they had liquefied completely. It was less than a week that they were at my house, we think that maybe the bread made the potatoes go bad quickly?...See Moremushcreek
