We keep it in the pantry. Years ago I had a countertop bread box, then a bread drawer, but I like it better with the rest of the food. When I had it in a drawer it would get jam packed with moldy english muffins and what not, for some reason I don't do that with pantry rollouts.

I got a bread drawer with plastic slide cover. I'll keep my current bread in there and extra loaves in the pantry.

Funny. I've always kept bread in the refrigerator if it's an open loaf or in the freezer if it's extra loaves or something we don't use often. Any time I've tried to keep it in a drawer or on a shelf, it molds too quickly in my house.

Frig.

It's just the two of us. Can be a week, sometimes, before we go through a loaf.

We once had a "bread box" on the counter - ages ago - couldn't stand the space it took up. And with my remodel, I have so much dishware and cookware and party ware, a bread drawer did not seem to be a good use of space for me.

In my old kitchen, we kept it on the same lower shelf as the toaster. In the new kitchen, that will seem like acres larger than the old, good question! Probably in close proximity to the butter.

I'm with jenswrens. It's in the frig, with extras in the freezer. With just DH and I, bread consumption is relatively low and it's either going to get stale if left too long in the frig or moldy if left too long in the pantry. I'll take stale over moldy any day. Obviously this is not a problem if your family goes through lots of bread. With kids eating toast and sandwiches everyday, and just scarfing a slice now and again, you can go through a loaf in a day or two, so I think then it does not matter where you keep it.

Now that I think about it, if it's a crusty loaf of sourdough, I'll store it immediately in the freezer (in its paper bag put inside a plastic bag) but that's only if I don't eat it all first, warm with lots of butter!! Mmmmm.

If its fresh bread, we keep it in a cupboard.

If it has been previously frozen, it needs to be stored in the fridge otherwise it will get moldy and/or stale very quickly!

In a basket on the counter. After 3 days, it goes into the fridge to prevent mold.

freezer for me. I'll take out what I need a bit ahead or if last minute, just almost defrost in the MW and then sit out for a minute

In our old kitchen, we kept it on a shelf in the pantry but in our new kitchen it's in a drawer in the kitchen itself.

When it was in the pantry, it went moldy too quickly, but in the drawer it seems to last twice as long. We also had the issue of rolls getting "lost" in the 18" deep shelves in our old pantry. The drawer is working out far better for us...even though it's approx 24" deep, the full-extension lets us see everything and, like I said earlier, everything seems to last longer!

In a drawer. We have limited space in our kitchen that led to us having a bank of 12" deep drawers - I was worried they wouldn't be very usable, but one of 'em is PERFECT for a loaf of bread with room for a hotdog/hamburger buns, too.

This was strange, we just went on vacation and a friend was house/dog-sitting for us, and right before I left, I had picked up a few potatoes - 3 or 4 in bulk in the plastic bag that's in the produce section, you know? Anyway, I stuck them in the bread drawer and while we were on vacation, our friend found that the potatoes had gone bad, like, they had liquefied completely. It was less than a week that they were at my house, we think that maybe the bread made the potatoes go bad quickly?

reedune. It wasn't the bread that made your potatoes rot but the plastic bag. If you had put them in loose I'll bet they would have been fine

this is me. it takes me a few wks to go thru a loaf of bread. mainly use it for grilled cheese or some toast. or to give the dog her meds.

Now that we have a rollout pantry, I keep the bread in an older Tupperware breadholder - before that it was wherever I could find an empty spot to tuck it in. It keeps it long enough for us to use up without too much waste - sometimes I have popped it in the fridge if we're not going to be using it for a few days. We don't eat that much bread but like to have it when the grandkids are here.

Freezer

I can't imagine why anyone would keep bread anywhere other than in the freezer - but then I am kind of nuts about this. I feel bread is only fresh for one day and the next it's stale. I bring it home and put it in the freezer, then thaw to use.

The bread we eat has preservatives in it, it lasts longer than a day. Bread goes stale faster if you refrigerate it, and we use it up fairly quickly so freezing it would be counter-productive. I only freeze things we might not use for a while, such as hamburg/hotdog rolls and bagels.

I keep mine in a breadbox.

I go through bread like water -- it doesn't really have time to go stale, and I don't really like bread from the fridge, it gets a soggy feeling to me. I used to keep it in a basket, but felt it was messy, and didn't stay fresh as long, AND, we occasionally have mice problems, and bread in an open basket is like a magnet to mice. Disgusting! I sort of wish I'd gotten a bread drawer made, with a sealing top, but we didn't.

I've been thrilled with this breadbox, but I have a lot of counter space.
