We don't eat a lot of bread and buns, so always in the freezer. Otherwise they turn green before they are eaten. :o)

fridge, or frozen...but we also only buy sour dough (costco) and i eat oregon trail raisin from sams...we do get buns for lunch..easier than sliced...dh takes his lunch...

I don't eat much bread anymore either so usually it'll go into the freezer or on the counter if I'm going to use it quickly. Take out what I need and let it thaw on the counter.

I bet many here remember the 'breadbox' that sat on the countertop. Ours was tin and had a rounded roll-top like an old fashioned desk.

What we'll be eating in the next day or two, on the counter. Otherwise, in the freezer. Never the fridge--it makes bread go stale faster than room temperature does.

Not just where, though, but HOW do you store your breads. It's a shame that they're no longer properly packaged. How many recall (you'd have to be in your 50's-60's or older) when plastic bread wrappers small perferations every so often? Bread really does need to breathe, stored in an air-tight wrapper isn't the best choice. But of course, with the current concern about sanitation and tampering, one would hesitate to buy bread in a bag with holes in it, I suppose. I leave my 'regular' bread in the plastic bags. Crusty breads--French, Italian, Artesan, etc--really need to be put in paper bags. In plastic, they loose their crispness pretty quickly. But they go stale so soon in paper, right? Try leaving the bread in the paper bag, but then slipping that into a plastic grocery bag and tying it shut. I find the bread keeps nicely, for longer that way.

we seldom have bread in the house, we don't eat it. Bought some this weekend because we were having company, what was left is now out for the birds.

I have one of those metal bread boxes that has the roll top lid, it is not old though, got it a few years ago. I put most stuff in side and the bread I use the most usually ends up on top of the bread box.

The stale bread either goes out for the birds and critters or I tear it up with a little milk or broth and give it to the feral kitties.

I don't eat bread, and DH only has 2-4 slices per week.

When I store a loaf of bread in the freezer, it seems to get crusty and hard around the edges pretty quick, not sure why that is...anyway, I don't store it in the freezer for that reason. I've taken to buying just buns in small packages for him rather than loaves of bread. Buying and storing loaves of bread is a problem for us, really.

I make 2 loaves every week. When it's cooled, I slice it, wrap each loaf in plastic and freeze.

We just "snap off" the slices we want while it's still frozen.

Hamb, hot dog buns get frozen as well, but they don't freeze well, I find.

I remember the bread boxes as well.....wooden or metal.

I still use a wooden breadbox,made by my son when he was in high school. He is now 42 years old! I store snack crackers and bars on the top shelf and bread and English muffins on the bottom. We don't eat a lot of bread, so any extra is stored in the freezer.

I have a white metal breadbox with green painted flowers. I use a breadbox mainly so Sparky doesn't snatch bread off the counter!

We might have ONE thing in the house, and it lives in the freezer.

Sandwich bread and english muffins live on the shelf in the pantry between the cereal and peanut butter. I usually buy two or three loaves at a time, so one on the shelf and the other in the freezer. With two teenage boys, I never throw out bread. It never lasts long enough to mold.

We too seldom eat bread any more and a loaf usually goes bad before it's finished. We recently found ourselves the recipient of a pallet of 16 bags of hamburger buns (12 each) that fell off a delivery truck last weekend. That's 192 buns!

DH couldn't catch up with the truck driver so he brought them all home. We've given them to neighbors and family and put three bags (36 buns) in the freezer and the counter is still filled with bags o' buns.

I think we'll see if the senior center that our neighbors volunteer at want them. We don't have any soup kitchens nearby.

Anyone have something creative to use them for if the sr. center won't take them?

GARLIC CROUTONS
1 (8 oz.) loaf French bread, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
Non-stick spray
1/2 tsp. garlic powder

Heat oven to 300 degrees. Spray 15x10x1 inch baking sheet with cooking spray. Spread cubes in spray-coated pan. Spray cubes with cooking spray. Sprinkle with garlic powder; toss to coat. Bake at 300 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes until dry, crisp and golden brown. Stir occasionally. Store in airtight container.

If you want them for turkey you can use turkey or poultry seasoning instead of the garlic.

I love bread - any kind. Keep it in a cabinet, and it usually doesn't have time to get stale.

If you didn't live so far away Schoolhouse, I'd give you the rest of our buns. :-)

Nope, don't use croutons and every Thanksgiving for 24 years have been celebrated at Knott's Berry farm, a local amusement park.

In the cabinet right above where I usually work and right near the toaster/oven.

At earlier times with 3 kids in the house, we'd leave the bread out ont the counter top. A loaf never lasted long enough to spoil.

Now there is just the two us in the house and we don't consume much bread. A loaf will last us a week or more. It will turn green at day 4 if left out. We throw it into the refrigerator. It easily keeps for 2 weeks in there.

Oh, jodi! I didn't read your post about the runaway buns until now - how funny! Would have loved to have seen your hubby gathering up that pallet and carrying all those buns into the house. My smile for the day.

Bread machine bread only lasts 4 - 5 days, I think ... stays in the fridge, between uses.

Never gets the time to go bad.
