Texture of cake I want - not genoise apparently?

I've thought for a long time that THIS texture of cake shown here was genoise. I had this kind of cake (made by very fancy bakeries) or very similar at two weddings and thought I was told that's what it was. Looking carefully now at pics and recipes, that info was clearly incorrect. Genoise is apparently more like sponge cake and very light, which is NOT what I want. This pic is a close up of a tres leches cake, which is exactly the texture I DO want for making a strawberry shortcake (but without the 3 milks, of course). I already make the typical biscuit type of shortcake but now want to try this version, similar to what I see in grocery store bakeries, actually. Other than tres leches, is there another type of white cake that has this rougher texture, large holes, is quite moist and is quite absorbent? If so, what might it be called? Otherwise, I'll just try making the tres leches and eliminate the milks - maybe drizzling some strawberry juice from the fruit across the top of the cake with the holes I make.
