What did you do with your old kitchen cabinets?
Comments (26)Like others, we will be installing most of our old wall cabinets in our garage for storage around DH's work bench. However, I will be salvaging the following: 1) old wooden pullouts to use in the garage base cabinets, after a nice application of WD-40 to ease the 30-year-old squeaky metal slides; 2) metal breadboxes (to store extra dog food in the garage storeroom safe from the little roof rats that sometimes find their way inside the house); 3) shelving material and shelf supports from all of the wall and base cabinets that will be going into the dumpster. I know that I will want more shelves than come with my new wall cabinets, so I will use the old shelving material to play with different interior layouts until I find the right configurations for my "stuff". Once I'm settled on the perfect shelf arrangements, then I'll order the permanent shelves from the cabinet manufacturer....See Morefireplaces-did you do yours in granite to match the kitchen?
Comments (11)We did. . . our living room wall is basically on the same wall about 10 feet away from our peninsula. It previously had a granite on it that we hated and wanted to change when we first bought the house (a pink, speckly granite we called the "disco granite"). It definitely would have clashed with the new granite and, while we considered a rock or tile, we decided to just go with the same granite. Our granite is leathered so it is a more natural look around the fireplace than a polished granite would be, albeit still a bold one because the granite has a lot of movement. I actually like the way the granite on the fireplace turned out better than the kitchen! (Though I really like both.) Here's the kitchen . . . the fireplace is to the left of the window in the far left of the picture....See MoreMy kitchen isn't even demo'd and I have my first major snag!
Comments (2)Anita, My favorite saying is "Grab your boot straps and keep on going". I say it to myself regularly and my kids (now mostly grown) say it back to me when things aren't going well. I had a similar problem with a surveyor several years back during the housing boom. At first I was panicked, then I decided to start calling other surveyors. It turns out that the first one I called had actually spoken to my guy that morning and was trying to figure out who all of the sick guy's clients were. We ended up with a seamless transition. Start calling now to find another cabinet-maker and ask if they can do the job for close to the same price as your original guy. You might be pleasantly surprised. Good luck!...See MoreKitchen demo'd: need layout help
Comments (22)Just back in town long enough to drop my DD off at work and thought I'd take a chance to update a bit. At the risk of sounding gushy, I'm still in awe of how all of you took the time and were able to stick in this that and the other thing in such short time. It honestly took me several hours of looking things over and redrawing in order to understand all your suggestions fully - and it's my kitchen (and second reno of it!) Lisa, I'm not discarding the idea of a peninsula yet, but I'm worried it would cost significantly more because of the amount of new cabs needed as well as counter. Really appreciate your drawings and the alternative if needed. We have a peninsula in the condo we are renting and I find it a bit less convenient than the island format. I had a hard time believing we could really fit the range and some drawers there as well, so I went back and re-measured, and it looks like we do (and I'm starting to get a little excited). I also think we will be able to reuse some of our current drawers and/or drawer fronts and not have to order too much new. I think we can also add a shelf where the current OTR is and have our microwave there which means we don't have to order any extra uppers either. Being at the lake and sleeping well for several days in a row helped me to come up with a plan for the island. I may be crazy, but I think I can make it myself. Or at least make most of it myself for much less than a custom island would cost. There is an unpainted furniture store here that will make custom tables. They have a table that looks very similar to my dream island - it even has drawers in the apron. I figure once I have the table, I can do the rest and putting it on large casters like those in the pic, will bring it up to a good height for prepping. This is getting long so I'm going to start another thread with my next question about countertops. Would it look too weird to add a shelf where the OTR is and put in a regular microwave? It would be a big shelf....See Moremorz8 - Washington Coast
