keeping dem danged bugs out of my dry goods
Comments (25)All of my dry goods go into either these: Lock and Locks or these: Click Clacks I found a set of large lock lock (or some knock off equivalent) at Costco that will hold 5-10+lbs of flour, rice, cereal or sugar when I buy in bulk. I use the round cannisters of various sizes to store sugar, flour, rice, pasta, beans, bread crumbs or anything else that the moths used to get into. I also occasionally put out some of the those sticky moth traps. The traps have been empty for awhile now. The only problems I've really had after using the containers: -flour mites: even in the container I got an infestation of flour mites. As some indicated, this means they were in the flour to begin with. The nice thing was that the mites were contained in the bin so I just had to dump it all and clean the bin and they weren't all over everything else in my dry storage -beetles: when I buy bird seed for my birds it often has beetles and/or eggs. If I don't freeze these first they'll multiply and become evident in a short period of time. However, the containers WILL prevent flour moths and beetles from getting into your dry goods if they aren't already in them....See MoreNitty gritty questions about planning cabinet and drawer storage
Comments (26)eagledzines: I haven't quite gotten to the step of weighing my items yet. Almost there! Thanks for the tips on spacing the toe kicks and DW. About the sink cabinet: I suspected 36" would be quite tight as that's the minimum suggested size from the manufacturer. The sink itself is 35" and a bit so I did worry it made for a very tight fit and difficult installation. I'll rejig it and give it more room. nightowl: I will add that to my notes! That makes a lot of sense - it must be a pain to pull things out of drawers with high sides and backs. romy718: Ahh... right, the drawer weighs quite a bit too! Glad you mentioned that. I would NOT have thought to add that on. And, yes, of course, the dividers will add some weight too. Thanks for sharing that thread - I will consult it this weekend as I begin measuring my drawers. beachem: Thanks again for giving me detailed, specific info. It really helps me to understand how things fit together and the different options I have. Adding your info to my notes too... lots and lots to think about this weekend!...See MoreNeed feedback on my drawer and cabinet storage plan
Comments (45)javiwa, thanks so much for the support. It sounds like you've had a extremely frustrating experience. :( Yes, you're right... I have come a long way. And I'm almost there! It helps to stop and take heart in that. :) The useable space you've got for your drawers is eye opening. It is shocking to me how much useable space is lost!! Wow. I will definitely be going to the cab maker's office to take some measurements from their small showroom. It will help to get a better idea of the dimensions. Thanks so much for the encouraging words javiwa. :) AnnKH: Ooo, what a good idea to order extra shelves!! I hate how I have to stack things in my current cabinets. Extra shelves that are adjustable would be SO great! I'm short too so I'll appreciate having a lower second shelf too! How many shelves did you get for each wall cabinet? I also love your above the fridge pull put! Things can easily get lost up in that deep cabinet so a pull out would be really useful. I'm adding that to my list of wants! Thanks so much for the photo!...See MoreDo you miss a storage drawer on pro-style ranges? Bluestar, etc.
Comments (16)I want to find out what the actual exact BTUs of the current burners I have are, to figure out how much extra I actually NEED. It's easy to be tempted by the super powerful options but maybe something that just isn't awful would be enough. :) Although I'm also intrigued by the cleaning on an open burner - I don't like cleaning around sealed burners, it's just one of those things I find generally annoying. Our fridge is a full-fridge Miele so it goes nearly right to the ceiling, no room for storage above it. Eventually I do hope to replace the cabinets and when I do that we might add a built-in microwave and that would give a space for that sort of storage above. (The ceiling in our kitchen is also a bit low compared to the rest of the house - it was the porch at some point and got closed in for the kitchen. So that loses a little space also.) I LOVE the Super Susan. Not sure we have a place to put that but that's so much nicer than with a pole in the middle. One thing I am thinking for more storage - not for pots and pans but for smaller pantry stuff - is to have shallow storage with a sliding door set INTO the wall to make use of the space near the backdoor that is too narrow for proper cabinets. But that's for when we redo the cabinets and right now we're just replacing the range. (Luckily the old cabinets were set up for a wider range than the normal 30" so I can go to 36" no problem.)...See More- 9 years ago
