Gardening in NC : Help Please

I am starting a garden at a local middle school in Raleigh. We will be donating produce to local homeless shelters through the plant a row program.

It's been awhile since I started a garden program in NC and I could use some advice on what to start inside in my growlab and when to transplant outside to the garden. I was given a random assortment of organic-non-gmo seeds. Many of these I have no experience with growing in this area.

who is going to take care of the garden.. once school is out????

ps: this is more a veg issue.. rather than a pest or disease issue [this is the clinic/pest forum] .. so i suggest .... you track down the veg or cornucopia forum.. whichever they are now calling it ... but do come back.. when the marauding hordes do attack ... otherwise.. i dont care where you post.. i am just trying to get you to a place where you will get the most answers ....

NC State is a great horticultural resource. They would have the extension office Ken mentioned.

there are 3 gardens of each theme (9 themes). there's always a veggie garden area (1 theme), an herb garden, one section for high school kids, usually a spooky type theme- up on the hill this yr and if you missed it, you missed out- and then a few others, normally one or 2 funny or novelty. we don't think up the themes, they give us a list, we ask for 3 we might want to work on, and are assigned a plot. i don't recall anyone with an avocado, but you might have seen nasima's guava. i thought it might be one, too, and asked. she had the middle salsa garden which took 1st place. as a contestant, i can tell you we are all soooo glad it's all done for another yr. we had tear out today. sad to work so hard to get and keep everything so perfect, and then rip it out in a day. all together, it's more work than most people can fathom. it IS fun, mostly, though. it's a great way to learn and meet some people with similar interests. i think john did a wonderful job this yr! the vision was his, for sure. i think we are all happy to have a change of directors this yr, and are looking forward to a great next one. zigzag, the n&o ran an article series on the gardens this yr, you should be able to search their site and find the whole set. there were lots of pix of certain gardens (mine wasn't one b/c i didn't want to deal with a reporter). i will try to post a link with some of the shots i took later this week. right now i'm just a bit fried. :) tammy Here is a link that might be useful: last of news & observer series

Hi Nell Thanks for your help. Yes, it IS Chickweed!!! I think it is SO invasive in MY yard this year because of all the soil improvement that I have done here. If that Chamberbitter is actually WORSE than this Chickweed then I hope I never see it!! I guess I will have to continue to just pull it up and dispose of it as I have almost 1000 tulips coming up that prevents me from using anything like Roundup to control it. The problem is that it HAS to be pulled up before it goes to seed when it gets warmer. It is something that I really dread as it has turned much cooler here and the wind is really bad too, making for very difficult gardening of any kind. Again, thanks for your help. Ruth

Thank you for doing your homework and knowing what we'd ask for. Shade is a huge problem on that lot. How attached are you to your beautiful, mature, trees...(that have no character)? Is your tree guy an experienced, certified arborist who can see the statue of Venus de Milo in the chunk of rock or is he someone who has a couple saws and a magnetic sign on his truck? I couldn't tell you which limbs need to go, but in that first picture at least 20 of them need to go from that cluster of limbs in the middle. That tree was never planned from the git-go. In the back yard it could be you should only have one of those mature trees. I mean it's nice to have mature trees but not if they are waaaaaay overgrown for their location. I'm sure everything was beautiful 20 years ago, but not anymore. They are out of scale or grown out of proportion to the lot size. Do this: Google willow oak and look at the Images tab. Does your willow oak look like the pictures or is it cramped up in itself or being pushed around by adjacent trees? Do the same for the rest of your trees. I just bought a house with some mature mesquite trees, mature crape myrtles, an immature (but overgrown) live oak, and a Texas mountain laurel. Oh and some dead stumps. The mesquite trees were ugly, in the power lines, and over growing a crape myrtle. So I had the stumps taken down to the ground, mesquite trees removed, and the live oak partially thinned out. I'm starting over with an almost completely blank slate, but it already has better curb appeal and, hence, higher value.

Thanks for the tips. I'm working in a year round school. I'll most likely be showing up daily even when I'm on "vacation" to tend to the garden until I can get a system in place where volunteers and students will be responsible for daily maintenance.

We wrote a grant for a grow lab, which I am now using in the classroom to start tomatoes. I'm just a bit overwhelmed trying to plan and figure out where the money will come from for supplies that I will need throughout the year.

With all the budget cuts and limited funds for schools as it is, it can be difficult to find a steady source of funding even though the vegetables grown will go to local shelters.

FYI, the average last frost date in your area is somewhere around mid-April, which is the same as mine. I started my tomatoes inside over a month ago. My cold hardy plants have already been sown in the ground and I'll continue to sow seeds for a few more weeks. The veggies that require warmth will be sown after the frost date.

The extension office or website will certainly have vegetable planting guides for you. I wouldn't be surprised if you could wrangle up some volunteers from the Master Gardener program to help get you started and to work with the kids.
