I can't remember the last time I saw canned date loaf in the store. Not that our little grocery store in town would have it. But, I am going to have to make a note to look for some when I go to the city next month. Now I have a craving for some. LOL

chi83, you weren't even born when the canned date nut bread was so popular. I'm 75, and enjoyed it in the late 40's and 50's :o) You can't find it in the stores anymore, so that's why you never heard of it. Served sliced with cream cheese.

I remember it , date nut bread made by Chock Full o Nuts. So delicious with cream cheese! I recently saw some dark bread by Paul Newman's Food Co. that looked a lot like this childhood favorite.

Mother would serve it with the cream cheese and serve as mini sandwiches for her teas, card clubs.

I haven't thought of it for years and now..........must find some!

I remember having that bread on our holiday table when I was a kid. I used to buy it too. I seem to remember it was S&W, but not positive. I read the ingredients one of the last times I bought it and was surprised to read that it had cornmeal in it. It definitely needed butter or cream cheese on it as it was a tad dry.

Thanks for the memories, Glenda. It was around in the 60s and early 70s too. Haven't thought of that for a long time. But I wouldn't pay that much for a loaf either.

I have never had it but I remember seeing it recently in the Vermont country store catalog. I am not crazy about dates so I probably wouldn't be that fond of it.

I do however remember the big canned hams years ago and I saw some small ones a few weeks ago in a grocery store. My mother would bake the big ones with pineapple rings on top and cloves. It was great but a rare occasion.

Glenda!! Why did you have to remind me of that?? I expect I ate about a ton of that back in the day. If somebody can remember, there is place on line, or at least used to be, where you can order many food items that aren't in the stores now. Years ago I looked all over for a certain kind of beans that I used in making chili, but no stores carried them any more, and I found them at that place. Problem was I had to order a CASE of them. Wouldn't do that. Now I've even forgotten the name of them. Go ahead and get a loaf of the date nut bread. We all need to give ourselves a treat once in a while I think.

I remember the Dromedary can version. If you google "date nut bread in can" you'll find images and recipes. The recipes look pretty easy.

You can usually find it on shelves during the Christmas holudays. Don't know why its seasonal.

here is a recipe I found: Date nut bread

¾ cup chopped nuts
1 c. chopped dates
1 ½ teaspoon Baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup shortening
¾ cup boiling water
2 eggs
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
1 ½ cup sifted flour

Directions:

Combine
nuts, dates, soda + salt in a bowl. Add shortening and boiling water.
Allow mixture to stand 15 minutes. Stir to blend. Beat eggs slightly,
add vanilla. Stir in sugar and sifted flour. Add to date mixture. Do Not
Overmix.
Place in greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 1
hour until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool Allow cake
to cool several hours for perfect slicing.

Our Kroger has the B&M Brown Bread-Raisin in a can. We have it every Thanksgiving and it's delicious.

This is a T and T recipe. It makes 2 loaves so you can freeze one for your Mexican train group

Date and Nut Bread

1 1/2 C. chopped dates

1 1/2 C. hot water

2 T. butter, softened

2 1/4 C. flour

1 1/2 C. sugar

3/4 C. coarsely chopped walnuts

1 1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 1/2 tsp. salt

2 eggs, beaten

1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Combine dates, water and butter. Let stand 5 min. Combine flour, sugar, walnuts, baking soda and salt. Stir in eggs, vanilla and date mixture just until moistened. Pour into 2 greased loaf pans. Bake 375 45 -50 min. Cover loosely with foil if tops brown too quickly. Cool in pan 10 min. remove from pans and cool on wire racks. I serve with softened cream cheese. It's as easy as making banana bread.

I remember the Dromedary one fondly, too. About a month ago I saw the B&M version and it was NOTHING like the moist date/not bread I remember slicing and putting cream cheese on many years ago. I think it was just some sort of dry brown bread in a can. Don't think it had dates OR nuts. We threw it out after one slice each.

I remember my mother buying Dromedary date bread back in the 1950's, it was so good ! It's in a newspaper article from 2002 that says Dromedary date bread was still available at Publix stores at that time.

I just called Publix and they told me they only get Dromedary for the holidays and they didn't get it this year. They have the raisin bread in a can in the bean section :o) Think he said B&W but someone here said that one wasn't any good.
