Where did you see the quote you posted, Sue? I, too, am curious as to who had insight into that. I saw clear info on GW about the upcoming move to Houzz (posted by GW), but saw nothing about it going to be closed down. Fact, or someone thinking they knew, or someone just supposing?

Sue_VA was correct in that the quoted material was in the thread that Chi83 started about receiving the Houzz welcome gifts.

Garden Web was set to be closed down, and they reached out to Houzz. They graciously took us on and the forums are alive and well, thanks to them.

I don't have all the details, but NBC had acquired iVillage some time back and it wasn't working out for them. They were dropping most of the things tied to iVillage and that included GW forums. What I've been reading in the recent conversations about the change too is that it was Houzz, - or the forums would likely be gone.

I wonder how 'valuable' an audience we are. It's all about reaching consumers -- selling something. There has to be a return on the cost of running these forums.

Perhaps they are hoping that we will migrate over to Houzz. I did the other day for the first time and checked into their Design Dilemma site. There was a question that someone posted a few days ago and they had 1000 responses, Yes 1000.

Yes I read that right after the change over in the first week actually. I thought everyone knew that, it was discussed in many different forums and I know I saw it mentioned here.

It was this or nothing. Iam glad that they did have interest in the GW forums and continue to want to host them.

morz, you are way ahead of me on this. After I read that NBC had bought iVillage (and yes it was quite a while back) I pretty much forgot about it. GW seem to be doing extremely well and I had no idea about how things were changing in the Web World. Until I got the emails from Tamara I had never heard of Houzz. I do hope they will continue the forums, but I guess it will never again be the way it was. How sad.

Sue, I haven't been on GW for quite some time but used to use it religiously. I got an email from Houzz to update my info. (I was a bit leery; didn't know who it was) I'm now on the site but EVERYTHING seems to have changed. I'm trying to find the member profile area to find some people I used to communicate with quite regularly. Do you have any idea if the profiles are still available on here.? Thanks. p.s. Yes, it's a shame it's not 'how it USED to be' .... Great place for all kinds of info and help.

Sue, I'd only dabbled a little in Houzz, the vast sea of photos there makes it a little hard for me to pick up ideas without spending too much time. I'm not a Facebooker either, so a little behind the times with all this social media type thing. GW is the one place I've participated and I would have hated to see the forums go. I've belonged to a couple of other gardening forums and haven't stayed with them, one that was more local to my gardening area for a while until it changed moderators and the new questionnaire for renewing a sign up had lots of more personal information, like age, type of occupation, education questions on the page that weren't optional. I don't know why one would care if I'm a barista or an attorney when it comes to sharing a gardening interest and I quit participating. Not that I have anything to hide, but I'd rather volunteer things about myself than be asked to provide.....I hope this one continues, I've enjoyed it for more than 10 years. 'Spike' days, I think I joined in 2002.

My favorite Christian website has lost its color-rich look and now has this same dreary Houzz look. Plus that gray line at the top too-I hate that-if your cursor goes a bit high something you want to see gets covered up and you have to undo the damage so to speak. I'm going to watch on You Tube and not go to the website. This whole Houzz thing is a crying shame.

I used to visit another forum similar to GW that was focused on organizing. It had the same message board style format. They announced in Nov. that they would be shutting down later that same month. The reason they gave was more people using their Facebook page and visiting their blog. Some of the members have gotten together and created a Facebook group with various threads to try and simulate the message boards as much as possible. It's not the same, but I'm glad we still have the ability to communicate. The look here is different now, but I'm glad these forums are still here and hope that Houzz continues them.

I try to stay out of the how to of such things as these forum boards. I heard about HOUZZ the first time, when we changed over. Somehow the letter to sign up for goodies didn't do it for me, even so I signed up, it all went over my head.

I am glad, we are here instead of gone.

I am listed at born on February 29 18hundred something on facebook. It isn't anyone's business when my birthday is, where I went to school, what kind of education I have, etc. etc.

Yes, I know, on gardenweb my birthday was listed, but that wasn't as wide open as facebook was/is. I have learned how to set facebook to avoid my posts to go EVERYWHERE, and I won't get all the garbage from EVERYONE. I also have less than 100 " friends", cause my friends are people I talk to, and email with. :)

Wouldn't that have been a shock to go there and have nothing. I am not as attached as some are, but I do like the opinions and information I get. It often helps me rethink, my opinion.

peggy13, sorry to be so long getting back here. I don't know how to find the old GW profiles, or if it is even possible. At the top of each page here there is a Search Garden Web box; you could try there. Type in a screen name of someone you remember and see if maybe it comes up. If you find even one, that would lead to finding others. Do you happen to have any of your old email boxes where you received emails? Look there if you do, or an address book. If you exchanged emails with some GW users, you might find something there. Good luck.

Sue, Thank you for getting back to my query. Good idea. I'll search around in my address book. It was so easy before when GW had the list of members' profiles. I guess I'm a 'creaure of habit' ;-D .... But, even though the site is 'different', it's better than not having access to GW at all. Again, 'Thanks'.

Hover over the user's name (using Sue as the example) and you'll see some details. Click on the profile and you'll be presented with some options. If the user has check off settings to allow emails or messages to be sent, you'll see that option. If you don't see the option, that's because the user's settings don't allow it.

I'm going to try my instructions to see if they work!!! BRB.....ETA you should see boxes in the big picture for "FOLLOW" and "MESSAGE". Follow means you get a feed of their posts. Message means just that....send a message.

Try it and let me know if that works!

I echo Raven's sentiments. Our two Canadian women's magazines had forums. All of a sudden there was a notice that the forums would be completely shut down in 2 weeks. They said FB was replacing online forums.

So all of the members either had to use FB or lose all of their online friends, saved crafts, recipes etc. The site was questioned if there was a way to save the recipes that they had 'saved' in their site, and there wasn't.

Ravencajun .... Re the 'profile page on GW' .... Remember where there was the list of Forums? There was an area headed 'Members'. There was a VERY long list of members listed by their 'user name' on GW. If you clicked on that user name, you could get their profile (not personal info of course, but their zone/interests/forums etc. etc. and then, of course, whatever info they wished to share from their settings). It was convenient if you were looking for another member in your geographic area who may have info re nearby nurseries, plant supplies, etc. P.s. What does KT-gw in your note mean? ;-D

I don't remember that. I probably never noticed it. I also use the search box and type in the username to locate the person, that leads me to the ability to click on their avatar and to the profile area.

I just realized today that to send an email to members who want emails, when you click on their username, you will see a "Message" box. That enables you to message them/send an email.

Got it! Just so everyone knows, the messaging feature is within Houzz. You may get an email notification to the address you provided but that just alerts you to the message. You get a link in the email that will take you to the message but you don't see the message content in your email.

You don't respond through your email either. You come back here, go to your profile and then go to your inbox. I kind of like that....but may have to ask the admins if there is any alert we can get on Houzz.

Dees, I received an email saying that I have a message. The message is at Garden Web. It looks like it shows up on our personal page, I replied back, so you should see it on your profile page. You need to check the box saying that you want to be notified of messages.
