Palatine-first time order
Comments (3)Hi Nancy, Placed my first order to Palatine a few weeks ago. Decided to give them a try after hearing so many nice comments about the big & healthy roses they send. Also their roses are on 'multiflora' root stock & that seems to do better in my acid soils. I ordered: Double Delight Folklore Goldsmith (Helmut Schmidt) Parole Stephen's Big Purple Now if it'll just stop snowing & spring comes.............. Comments (13)I've ordered from several different places, and have so far liked them all, including Chamblees. On the one occasion when there was a severe damage problem caused en route, Chamblees replaced the rose. You do need to report the damage immediately, though, if it's so extensive that the rose might not recover. I've decided to stick with the easily-planted ownroot roses from wherever I end up buying any particular rose. And with the possibility of severe winter dieback, the ownroots also have an advantage over the grafted in that whatever grows back is necessarily going to be the same variety you ordered. Someone who has grown both kinds for sale, Paul Zimmerman, says that the ownroots are only smaller than grafted plants during the first three or so years because when you get them they're younger plants than the grafted roses... but that they'll soon catch up. One of my ownroots from Chamblees last year, Cinco De Mayo, started out as the tiniest rose I've ever seen, but had grown to about 4' wide, 4' tall, and very bushy by the fall. One of the best places for a newcomer to learn about growing roses is Paul Zimmerman's website with his videos covering many aspects of growing roses. Comments (13)I am! Better looking than any roses I've ever received from heirloom, no diss intended, the root system and all looked great! High country's roses look symilar( SP?) in comparison. I only have a small green house, and the ones that would fit in it I put in their lol. I plan on buying a bigger one because I don't think I will be able to plant them until next spring , and just pot them up into bigger pots when they need it. Right now they are in one gal. and enjoying the rain since we got some today! then I will put the smaller ones back in the greenhouse until wed, and get a bigger greenhouse for them all! My husband thinks I'm crazy for my love of roses, but I don't care! he has his passions and I have mine!...See Morehello from a first time poster long time reader
Comments (26)Hey there, Frugaljon....welcome aboard. I wish to recommend to your pleasure a video on YouTube about the Hanging Hosta of Hampshire. Ever heard of them? I've watched the videos innumerable times, trying to note details of how they manage so many hosta, and what happens when winter comes, you know, just looking and dreaming. I link to one such video below. My hosta garden is 25 x 100 and is in coastal Alabama (near the Gulf of Mexico), and my zone is considered 9a or at best 8b. We have an undependable winter here, but we manage a few freezes and cold temps enough to make dormancy possible. Get ready to join the fun day after Christmas, when the Hosta Alphabet series begins. Until then, similar threads exist for last last several years. Wonderful resource. Here is a link that might be useful: HANGING HOSTAS OF HAMPSHIRE video...See MoreMelody Rose
