Costco Hams?

My husband has turned into a Costco junkie. Do they have good hams (their brand) or is there a brand that they carry that is good?

In need of ham help!

Their boneless Mastercraft is very acceptable and since its boneless very easy to carve. I,personally, do not care for spiral sliced hams so have never tried the one in the red wrapper

Yes, the Costco ham is salty. All cured ham is salty. Different processes are used for different 'cures'. (many methods) (-I appear to be invisible. I posted above how to desalt a ham.) Some are lest sensitive to the salt, some love it. The sugar coating mixes balance the salt making it appear less salty but that does not remove it, just masks it. Directions will be on your package of spiral ham. From a company in Quebec(lafleur) that has been in the ham business for over a 100yrs has this on their web page... "Before cooking Since ham is often salty, it's best to desalt it before cooking or, for cooked ham, before eating. Desalting ham In a large saucepan, cover the ham with water. Bring to a boil. Let stand for 20 minutes, then drain. If the ham is very salty, repeat the process." -another recommended method, if your ham came out to salty, especially for left-over slices for breakfast, is to put slices in a zip-lock with with some milk and soak a few hours or over-night. Milk will draw out some of the salts. (-i use that method for desalting the final rinse of salt fish.) The Cooks bone-in sounds delish and bone-in is preferred in our home. Less likely to dry out. DH loves it but tends to over-eat so we do a leg of lamb. His choice.

I have a tiny vintage tv in the kitchen pantry run and often have the two cooking/food networks on for background noise....zip back and forth between the two as some are 'nails on chalkboard'. CooksIllustrated tasted hams yesterday and I think Cook's won by a landslide. Barely paying attention because I thought testing only three was not a good and fair test. They did test without heating and glazing. (I think it was Cook's brand. It was a clear package) I just checked and they have tested a few times but I don't have access to their site.. Then looked for other 'best' reviews. Many winners. Then found my method posted above and it is a JuliaChild recipe I'm sure where I first came upon it....simmering in aromatics. I used Kirkland because it jumped in my cart passing by.

We celebrate both Passover and Easter. Passover is generally just my immediate family (DH and 4 kids) and I admit it can be somewhat harder for me as I have no foundation for it and hubs does not like me messing with his traditions (unless it is something he wants to change, like have lamb). I was also worn out that day so we had brisket (which my 17 year old did in the crockpot), haroseth, salad and a almond-lemon torte with berry sauce. I did enjoy the seder as the 2 youngest ones were able to participate fully and help with the reading. Dh tries to go without leaven the whole Passover week and my 13 year old daughter wants to jump on that bandwagon, so I will do my best in that regard this year and next year will plan things out better to accommodate them. Easter morning, our church holds a potluck breakfast. I made a low carb upside peach coffee cake. It was made with coconut flour and it is a recipe I hope to play with more in the future. The nice thing with a breakfast potluck is it seems more people are willing to bring food that they did not pick up at Wal-Mart so it was quite filling. After church, I was ready for a nap but we went to my sister's house for her Easter dinner. They generally eat differently than we do and we were quite full but still partook. My contribution to that was a chocolate cloud cake from Nigella Lawson. The cake is flourless and there was a large mound of whipped cream on top. I will have to make that again sometime soon, I had forgotten how good it was. We grabbed a couple of rosebushes that were on hold on the nursery since we were in town and when we came home, I was happy to not eat anything else until the following day.

I've bought Trader Joe's, and Kirklands (Costco) most recently. If having a large number of people buffet style, I might buy a spiral ham but as noted above, its really easy to end up with a dry ham....ask me how I know ;0) Carving a whole ham can be a pain in the neck, or an imposition. I remember telling my young adult nephew one year, its time you learned to carve so be prepared....He watched a few you tube clips and did come with a plan. Truthfully - we eat the Kirkland Master Carve half hams year around. Very good, very easy. I have a couple in the freezer and one in the refrigerator now. They do not make a stunning presentation for a holiday table though ;0)

We always got our hams from Costco whenever we didn't have homegrown. Boneless or spiral...they were always good.

We take the red foiled hams from Costco, and toss the spice packet into the trash. Then we put the ham flat side down in a tray or shallow pan, pour a bit of Coke or diluted apple juice (optional) into the layers, so that there is only about a quarter inch of juice in the bottom of the pan. Then we smoke the ham for 2.5 hours in a smoker. It turns out so good and moist, there is no other recipe anymore.

(Edited to correct error: TJ's, not Costco has the uncured hams! Sorry)

Trader Joe's used to (and probably still does) have uncured hams around Easter. They are quite good. A friend who is a fine cook said the one I gave her was "the best ham she ever ate."

We've been buying their spiral hams for years to serve to a huge gathering here on Christmas Day (and at other times, as well). They've always been delicious and very well received.

I'm a COSTCO junkie too. We have used their hams. However, I am not a ham expert, but they seemed fine to me. I would expect that they would beat the Trader Joe's price.

Thanks so much everyone. The tragic irony in my having asked this question, is now it looks like I'm going to be making a vegan Easter (AAAACKKKKK!) and celebrating with a ham at a later date. So, I'll still probably pick up a ham at Costcos, but maybe celebrate the weekend after Easter (Isn't that when Russian orthodox Easter usually is?)
