HAD to do it!!! 1 below 0 @ DQ!!

Every March 1st, a Dairy-Queen in Moorhead, MN opens back up!! They close up the evening of Halloween every year. There's no indoor seating, so it's a "park your car & walk-up" kinda place.

I guess it's been there since 1949!! It's one of those quaint old DQ's, but it's SOOOO busy, with all the schools/colleges in town.

So...off I went this evening, to get some EARLY season treats! Callie likes her "Puppy-dish", which is a small bowl of vanilla soft-serve, with a milk-bone bisquit on it! The "normal" eat-in DQ's just look at you blankly if you order one that way!! Their prices are lower too, so that's even better!

We have a free-standing DQ stand in the city and I swear, their DQ tasted different, better, from any other DQ I've ever eaten at. Haven't eaten there in years and years though. Brother always used to get a brown derby...choc with a choc dip. My fav is the vanilla with the cherry dip.

Nothing like an old fashioned ice cream stand. We used to take our girls to a family owned ice cream stand every summer.

We stopped at an ice cream stand in Arizona where the in-a-cup sizes were large, medium, small, kiddie, and doggie. What's doggie size? Same as kiddie size but without a spoon. The milk-bone is a better idea!

Waiting for OUR DQ stand to open, I think I'll check it out today and let you know!

I live in S.E. Ohio. I have 3 rows of silver queen corn 20 feet long. I had an early start to my corn and 2 rows are already approx. 3 ft. The smaller row is 1-2 ft. on the S.W. lower side (more shade) on that side. We had a storm last night (Jun 16, 2009) and most of the smaller row was blown over which kind of blew me over (short corn down taller up?). I tilled the other day and the soil between rows was wet but fairly loose. I put on my crocks (footwear)and pulled dirt around the base of the stalks then lightly stomped on the side opposite the direction of the wind. I righted the corn as I pulled dirt. They look good now but the suspected continuing rain could put me back out there this week. It has already been a rainy spring here. Later, as the corn becomes taller, I may set some tomatoe steaks and weave some jute (twine) in for added support. A good crop will be worth any added effort I put into it. I'm beginning to better understand one effect from Adam on all of us (Gen 3:17-19). Gardens need prayer!

A small amount of snow daily for the last few ... and more to come in the next few. On national radio today, they're calling it ... "S P R I N T E R"! Really good amalgamation: 8-letter word, using 5 of the 6 letters in "Spring" ... ... and 5 of the 6 letters in "Winter". Just a few degrees below freezing, both night and day, here ... ... so I'm still using two pans for watering the cat, taking one into the house daily to melt the residual water from the day before, that the cat finds really too "hard" to access! ole joyful

Yeah where is spring????? It will come about the 4th of July! Marie the deer are starving over here because there is so much snow cover. I heard of one walking into a farmers yard and keeling over dead. Last weekend we made a trip to the capital city. In the middle of the country (AKA no where) there was a herd of 200 or more deer! In a corn field. They didn't move either, cars stopped and looked and so did the deer. It was hairy coming back through that area at 11pm. Deer on the road. Not all 200 or more but 10-12? In the middle of the road and grazing along it. No school here and further east. DD couldn't even see the lines on the highway to make it the 15 miles to work this morning. DH works at the local radio station, it is boys BB tourney time (regionals) its still on as of now. I imagine they will cancel too as some of these towns won't be able to make the hour or more trip to the center where they are played. I'm so stinking SICK of this!!!!!!! I sure hope this is the last blast for the winter?? Its going to take a good month or more for all this crud to melt. We have mountains in the next door lot, its empty and I do mean mountains of snow! At least 8 or 10. Its depressing here. Stay warm Marie, I hope it doesn't hit you too bad. Did you hear of the ambulance accident yesterday? It was from my town, so sad. Carol I'd cancel that mammo. Hate to tell you that, but its going to be nasty in your neck of the woods too. Better safe than sorry.

Love DQ! At least I did as a kid. Have they changed their formula like so many companies have done? When I was a kid, we vacationed on Martha's Vineyard every year. Back then it wasn't at all what it is now - a playground for the glitterati and literati, bazillion dollar homes, etc. We rented a ramshackle little cottage on Tashmoo, which is now a gated, very hoity-toity community of ridiculous gargantuan trophy houses. Yuck. Anyway, our cottage was made of tar paper, I believe. It had no running water or electricity. There was one of those old pumps at the kitchen sink to pull water up from the well. We kids loved it, of course, and thought it was the coolest thing and loved that moment when you first felt the water coming up and then…there it was! Kerosene lamps lit the place, and of course there was an outhouse. One of our yearly traditions was, on Sundays, I believe it was, we would take the trash to the dump. Oh boy. We LOVED going to the dump! While Dad was unloading the trash and tossing it into the landfill (just a big hole in the ground back then, not these bins they've got now, we would run around looking for "cool" stuff people had thrown out! Yes, so exciting! And on the way back to the shack, we always stopped at DQ for an ice cream.

The excitement was barely containable!

Does Cooper get a headache from eating that too fast? Lol! Nothing better than an old-fashioned ice cream stand!

Many summers our family went to Minnesota for vacation. My Relatives are all Minnesota farmers. We always marveled at how much better the ice cream tasted at the DQ in MN vs. TX!

I think it's the same DQ soft-serve as the eat-in DQ's. Just seems to taste better! They've got all the modern "cool" equipment inside. We missed-out on February's "Red-Velvet" Blizzards, since they weren't open yet! Like I said, it's so nice their prices are ~ 1/3 lower!!
French-Silk Blizzard is my fave!!!

I am not a huge ice-cream fan (could it be living in a climate with 8 months of winter?), but DQ soft serve is luscious! What makes it taste so fresh compared with other brands? McDonald's soft-serve actually seems to hurt my mouth.
