marble bathroom counters in ladies room- real life

This marble counter is in the ladies' room basement of Memorial/Annenberg Hall at Harvard, in the morning before much use. I was struck by the stains which may be rust? The stains have not changed in my visits over several years so must be somewhat permanent. The building dates back to 1894 but the undermount sinks indicate that the countertop may be relatively recent in the last decade or two perhaps? No worries about etching since the surface has naturally honed with use. At first I thought perhaps there were iron contaminants in the marble but the staining correlates to the high-use sinks. The last one that looks "clean" is in a corner that is not much used so the stains seem to be related to use not to cleaners. However that does not explain why there are "stains" on the backsplash of the least used sink. Any ideas on cause of the stains?
