nibbler of artichokes and broccoli

Hi, All,

I recently moved from NJ to CA and am faced with the enormous intimidating and pleasant challenge of starting over from scratch.

While I'm planning and building my infrastructure I bought a couple of artichoke and broccoli transplants from the local nursery and stuck them in some existing terraced landscaping beds among some bushy shrubs and ornamental grasses, just to test the waters and see what ate them.

Well, I have my answer - they were soon nibbled to bits - but being in an entirely new climate I don't know what did the damage. Rodent? Caterpillar? Any insight would be much appreciated!
