Hand Mixers vs. Hand Blenders
Comments (8)A hand mixer is more for making batters, whipping eggs or cream, etc. It's kind of an old fashioned appliance. Most people prefer a stand mixer, unless they're short on space or money. A stand mixer is better for doughs and can knead. It has a lot more power. An "immersion" or "stick" blender is basically a blender which uses your own vessel instead of a blender jar. It isn't as powerful as a blender with a base motor, but it's very convenient to be able to put the blender into the pot of soup rather than transferring jarful after jarful to the blender and then into another pot. You have to be careful to keep the blender blades below the surface of the soup (which is lower with the convection of the blades going round) or you'll decorate your whole kitchen with soup. Equally, you can use it for blendering smoothies or mixed drinks in your glass or pitcher. Many immersion blenders also come with separate attachments such as Raro described. I think the whisk on mine is pretty useless because it takes less muscle power for me to hand whisk than to hold the blender and let it go round and round. Additionally, it's the circular or orbital motion when whisking that gets the air in, not rotation, which means doing it by hand is better anyway. The one task I think the whisk might be superior for is frothing, which is a circular motion. I think that's mostly because a cup is too narrow for a circular motion, and also, I think circular might build up more air in the top rather than all the way through (though that's a guess). I love the mini-food processor that came with my immersion blender. I didn't use it for years, but when I tried it I found that it worked really well for herbs because the power comes from above rather than below. I haven't used my regular blender with the motor base and jar since I got the immersion blender. It's even still in the box since I remodelled my kitchen (about a year). I can blend anything with the immersion blender, it's a lot easier to clean up, and to store. But it's nothing like a mixer. I can't imagine how one would use them interchangeably. Imagine doing tasks by hand. Blender tasks are done with a knife (chopping) and a sieve of some kind (pureeing). Mixer tasks are done with a wooden spoon (mixing, beating), whisk or fork (whipping), or bare hands (kneading). The appliance that will do some of both is the food processor. It'll do chopping and pureeing and most also have a dough blade that'll do mixing and a certain amount of beating....See MoreKitchenAid? Blech!
Comments (66)Carol, your blender is really neat! I haven't seen a commercial with pushbutton speeds like that before. I think the ones I remember only had high and low. Tracey, I too have gotten some of my best recipes out of mixer cookbooks, especially before cooking forums and what not! Pete, I think that Pleasant Grain often has a sale just before Mother's Day, so I'll watch and see if they do this year. I put all my holiday bonus and tax refund in the bank, so maybe I'll spend part of my rebate on something fun, since I guess technically what you're supposed to do is spend it, LOL. By the way, on a similar but different topic, did you know that Miele is coming out later this year with a new line of upright vacuums that they are making themselves instead of rebadged Panasonics? I think Andy said they'll be out in the US in the 4th quarter, I think earlier in Europe, not sure about Canada....See MoreFinished Kitchen: White-ish, charcoal counters and blue glass bs
Comments (43)Alexx - I really love your kitchen! It came out beautifully!! I have a question about your counters. I am doing a similar look with the white shaker cabs (framed w/full overlay) and quartz (Caesarstone Raven) countertops. I will also be doing a mitered edge with a 1.5" overhang. My question is ... how far do your counters project past your cabinet boxes, as well as past the doors/drawer fronts. There is some dispute between my cabinet maker and the countertop folks. Cabinet maker says I should have a 1" projection past the doors/drawer fronts, while the countertop folks are suggesting a "flush" appearance (not truly flush, but more like a 1/4" projection). Can you tell me what yours are? And if anyone reading this has suggestions or advice, I would appreciate it! Thank you!...See Morebacksplash ideas for Sea Pearl or Volga Blue
Comments (66)Flevy, I am the b*tch too. How dare you make my child learn? Usually they change their minds after they start the next grade. They realize that they learned a lot from me. One girl said to me this year that this year was the first year she has retained anything. Sept actually said in staff meeting to only teach math and reading...nothing else. I told school board press in Dec that I was leaving in may. This was my first year there since we moved south. I also told supt that I refused to only teach math and reading. So I am not a team player. My fifth graders had five tests. Flevy,, I have been saying it for years. We are not always sending our brightest students to college. Some get grants to go and put little effort out. Why should they? They aren't paying for it. That is a beautiful kitchen. Love the cool green tile, window light fixtures, and glass doors. What is the cabinet on the left with the mixer on it? Unusual base cabinet....See Moremrspete
