Tartine bakery is one of the local San Francisco icons: a great bakery which has slowly segued into a restaurant. KQED, our local PBS station, has a nice food blog that highlights local businesses and food issues.

This column peers into the restaurant end, Bar Tartine's very interesting refrigerator, full of pickles and housemade condiments:

For those who are interested, like me, in reading menus (I am a menu junkie, LOL), take a look at not only their dinner menu but also the brunch menu; interesting dishes.

Nice menu.

The whole idea of going out to eat is to have dishes you don't or can't make at home.

OK, I had to smile at the dinner menu which had "liverwust available upon request". Does that mean most people don't want it, or does it mean the chef likes it so well that she doesn't want to share? (grin)

I like reading menus, but mostly those that I might have an opportunity to actually visit, so I try to limit them to within the state, or at the most, Chicago!

I agree with dcarch, the reason I go out to eat, although I do it very rarely, is to have something I don't make at home, although I can certainly make sauerkraut, LOL. It did remind me, though, that kimchee and kraut can be made in smaller amounts than 50 gallon crocks, so freshly fermented stuff could be on hand easily if I just made room in the fridge.

The high aluminum mineral content of the soil (especially in central Arkansas) is more responsible for plants not growing in your area than the clay, itself. It's important to remember that all clays come from parent materials...and while the final form of kaolinite is considered a determined structure, there's still parent materials in various levels of "decay" and "freed substances" from the parent materials surrounding this clay. The high aluminum soil parent mineral soil sources found in a lot of AR (gibbsite and boehmite, especially...which is a major mineral soil component in AR) along with the combination of low pH in the area soils makes the aluminum content highly available to plants. Aluminum is very toxic to most plants and the low pH making it available in soils with an already higher-than-normal content from parent materials is a "perfect storm" of undesirable soil for a lot of plants. Luckily, it's relatively easy to raise pH (compared to trying to lower it) in order to greatly lessen aluminum soil availability for plants. While kaolinite clays do have aluminum parent minerals...some parent materials, especially with pH influence, are more plant toxic than others with their availability. Gibbsite and boehmite are especially easily broken down, reactive, and made available in soils since they are bound mostly with oxygen and hydrogen rather than comprised of more complex structures. sombrueil_mongrel, that is another explanation but the KitchenAid Dishwasher has a reflection to it and is more chrome-like so is brighter with less grain. The LG Dishwasher has more nickel in it which can be seen by the more grayish color and the fact that it is not magnetic. It has a grain to it. I was thinking the KitchenAid was richer but now I see that the LG's stainless is most likely sturdier and definitely easier to clean. I now feel disappointed since the Bosch dishwasher with the cutlery tray I loved and it matched better but I chose the KitchenAid for the drying feature and the little bag in the front to hold plastic lids. If I known that the Bosch had a better stainless steel, then I would have had one more factor to consider. But in all fairness, so far I have been happy with my KitchenAid Dishwasher as well as my LG Refrigerator. I do wish they matched better and I know the Bosch was a better match with the handle but I had no idea it was a better match with the SS also since the store did not have the dishwashers near each other and their lighting is different. I am going to have to test the GE Cafe Range I am going to buy but I have a feeling it will not be magnetic since to my eyes it matches my LG refrigerator better now that I know that a more gray look could be more nickel content. But I would love to believe that they are both the better Stainless Steel with the grain different and one having a little more Chromium and a little less nickel. But I don't see any nickel in the finish of the KA DW. Does anyone know what type of SS each of these appliances is made out of? Our world is so amazing that we can never know everything and everyday is a new learning opportunity.

The main part of my reno was done in 6 months. It is the details that are way behind schedule. My kitchen was not new construction, and I had minor changes. Walls were kept in place but we did change around the configurations and make it more workable for us. The foot print was the same but the locations of oven, refrig etc... changed for the better. I think my reno would be called MINI by some of the amazing transforations via GW. Right now I am waiting for molding trim along the ceiling, a new ceiling of beadboard to be put in. I want that painted a glossy white. And I was going to change my kitchen wall color but I love what it is now and have decided to keep it. I have hired someone to finish the details as DH is so busy with playing soccer, coaching soccer and watching soccer. Every so often new things pop into my mind. I am definitely getting a new faucet. Possibly a new pendant and some kitchen candy like Dishware, chaning the glass ware. My floor guys are coming back to finish anothe room. I am having drapes made for this giant family room window that is off of the kitchen and needs serious changes but I consider this all part of my reno. When the molding guy comes, my DH doesn't know this yet but I am putting in a Modernaire hood. I have saved so much with everything else I know he will go along. DH can be a penny pincher but I have a new promotion (yes hard to believe in this economy) So I can splurge on my whim. Well, within reason I am not married to Warren Buffet so I am still careful. : ) ~boxerpups

jaansu, before you throw any more money at it, you should do a little more investigating. If there are just two wires to the plug that goes to the fan, then your guess of hot and neutral are probably pretty safe, if they're blue and brown (non-north american universal colours, brown is hot) for example. Rule#1 - check for voltage. Work on from there. Ok, no voltage? Good idea to check the switch...however, at this point I'd also be looking for a wiring diagram. Back in the day, there was a wiring diagram stuck on the back of the fridge somewhere....or you may find one by googling. As for why the fan turns off when the door is open, is basically to reduce the loss of cold air. Like the others said, the switch might be with the freezer door - I assume this fan is at the back of the freezer? Another possibility is the fan may be tied to the defrost timer, if you have one. Most frost free/cyclic defrost fridges have a timer, which cuts in periodically and runs a heating element that melts the accumulated ice from the coils (the last fridge I dismantled did, anyway) and the fan will either run, or not run, during this spell. If the defrost timer fails it might be failed in the 'on' position (when mine did we found out because there was a hot smell while the element kept running, and the frozen food all thawed) at another point I had to replace the fan in that fridge, I had a motor bought from an electronics junk store (new) for a dollar, it turned the right way and was similar in size, with some bushing it fitted fine and it's still running almost 20 years later (as far as I know, it's in my ex-wife's house ;) So I would look for wiring diagrams, and see if you can learn more, the switch itself may also be bad or there could be a bad splice somewhere. Most of the parts like switches, fans etc are semi-universal and will be more or less interchangeable, there will no doubt be a refrigeration or appliance store that will sell parts, you may have luck there if you don't have a collection of spare parts like me (although after my move back to Canada my supply is very limited and I'm regretting how much I gave away/sold/tossed out)

My philosophy as well,dcarch! I get really irked when I eat out and my meal is something I could have replicated or made better myself at home, for less cost.

Well, at $76 a person, my only hope of much of that food is to learn to make some things myself. The cookbook looks very interesting and may have some things for me to try. I wish the library had it for me to look at first. That is definitely an interesting place.

It is the most bizarre collection of things I've ever seen on a menu. I'm sorry, but I would take to the hills rather that eat there! I don't see how sauerkraut can go with a cheese dip... Too European in my thinking, perhaps?

I hadn't looked yet, but IC's comment made me clear the space to do so. I agree that I don't find the menu appealing, and I often like "interesting" food. The way I read it, however, the sauerkraut isn't supposed to be consumed with the cheese dip. It looks to me like both are items on a grazing list. They might appear on the same board if you get the group meal or order them both, but that whole section are separate small plates to be nibbled on here and there, with crackers and crudite, or something, not a composed dish.

Oh, and it should be said that, in general, Americans don't do the English/Euro thing of putting a little bit of each item on the plate on the fork all together at once, so our ideas of what do go on a plate together are more liberal. Some chefs here do make the kind of meal where the Euro style forkful is the way to go, but mostly we eat a bite of this and then a bite of that. Of course, in California we tend to feel deprived if we only get enough vegetables to act as condiments for the meat. Chefs come here from elsewhere and have an adjustment period learning that we want a full serving of a variety of vegetables, not "garnish". :)

I got the impression the Family and Friends $76 meal is a tasting menu, with one dish following the other, a tiny serving of each.

Well, I love a mezze style meal but that....... just doesn't appeal.

I suppose that the "everything on the fork at the same time" approach (although Plllog has opened my eyes to that!) is a sign that every goes together or complements each other in some way.

I'm just a grump stuck in my ways..........
