Can we talk about throw pillows?

I'm puzzled about throw pillows on sofas, loveseats and chairs.

My new sofa and loveseat each came with two lovely 22" throw pillows. When I'm not using the furniture, I have them nicely arranged (no... no "chopped" look for me, thank you.) But when I'm using the furniture, I'm at a loss. The sofa cushions are a bit too deep for me to sit comfortably (I'm "vertically challenged") so having a pillow behind me is a good idea. But these pillows are so fluffy, they push me too far forward on the seat. I suppose I can buy other coordinating pillows that are smaller and not as posh. But then, that begs the question: what do you do with the pretty pillows if you're not using them while you're seated? Toss them on the floor? Keep them in a nearby basket? Something else?

How do you deal with YOUR throw pillows? Please, can someone give me a lesson in Pillows 101? Thanks!

pocopson, I have been dealing with this and my solution is: I have a sofa table behind my couch, and when I have guests over, the pillows go underneath the sofa table. I am trying DESPERATLEY to find a huge rattan basket to fit underneath the sofa table, but haven't yet! The area beneath my sofa table is unused, so that is my plan. I will even buy two to sit next to each other if I could find them. My problem is they are either too wide (depth-wise) or too deep. Maybe I need a new sofa table LOL!

Michelle, it came from a place in WI. Very nice to deal with. Before I ordered they made sure everything I chose would do well here. Nice garlic, too. I ordered these hardnecks: Russian Red, German Red, Spanish Roja, Chesnock Red, Brown Tempest, Romanian Red, Siberian and two softnecks, Silver White and One they recommended, Simonetti. Ohiomom, it's that simple....I just toss whole peeled cloves and a little olive oil with my hands and roast them until they're light brown. Then I load them onto plastic wrapped cookie sheets, freeze and then dump them into freezer bags. I'm using the last of mine from a year ago and they're fine. Having them on pizza tonight. I fall in the more-is-more style of decor so layering is arranging several things on a table or other surface in a harmonious way. For example I might use a runner, a lamp, a plate on a plate stand, a plant, a statue, and a decorative box all together on a buffet or hall table. Or I might use several candles in candlesticks arranged in a group perhaps on a silver tray. Another example is using several pillows of different sizes or shapes on a sofa or bed with some arranged in front of others and a throw as well. One thing I like to do is overlap framed pictures on my mantel. Using an area rug on top of carpet is more extreme layering. I think layering has to do with embellishing, textures, as well as patterns. The layered look, while the term may be fairly recent, goes way back. Victorians decorated this way with the layers of window treatments and doilies under every tschotske and ornament. There are some styles in which layering works better than others I believe. Contemporary style would lend itself to less or even no layering whereas English country cottage, Victorian, even Traditional almost require it.

Us too! Two pillows each, plus I have a body pillow. Shopping for new bedding right now, but my current set also has 2 shams, 3 standard decorative pillows, and 5 throw pillows. I manage to make it all fit, and not go all the way to the foot of the bed. :) And I should mention, king bed, so all pillowcase pillows are king-sized. I put the first two on each side (4 total - in regular pillowcases) flat against the headboard. Vertical might be a better visual. This is the key to it all! Duvet is folded back, with the fold right at the pillow line. Then the two duvet shams, as vertical as I can get them (but invariably they're a bit tilted back at this point), then the three standard pillows in decorative cases (from a different bedding set that coordinates well), then 5 throw pillows (three of one design, two of another). The body pillow goes into the armoire when the bed is made. I only make the bed on weekends, which is when I change sheets, or if we're having company. :) I don't have a full-bed shot and we're in the process of moving so it will be a while before I can take one, but: The ribbed green are the duvet shams, cream are the 3 from the other set, green with white/wooden beads are 3/5 throw pillows.

Well the wedding is over and I bought 4 cases too many of our wine. OH WELL :) I'm drinking a glass of the Pinot Noir as I write this. The Rose' was spectacular. I have just under 2 cases of each left, lol. I've been using it here and there. I took a bottle over to neighbors for yoga night. And I'm set for the winter! The Garnet was $15/bottle and the Commanderie de la Bargemone was $16/bottle. I got a 10% discount for buying by the case. Everyone LOVED the wine (and that killer wedding cake) This is what we got:I know this isn't about Woolite, but the thread had changed a bit in the telling ;)

Nice to know! Two of the West Elm one's might work for me. We just got a West Elm a few months ago, and I haven't made it in there yet-I need to make a trip up there.

I have a floor cushion near the sofa & they get stacked on there - only have 2 right now. Hubby ALWAYS removes them as soon as I put them back on the sofa - he lives there, y'know...

I suspect that your pillows are filled with polyester batting. If you replaced the existing fill with down or less expensive feathers, you should be able to use them to support your back when sitting which would give them more purpose.

I am looking to make some new pillows for my couch , do the down pillows really last longer ? It seems the pillows I buy go flat every 6 months or so. I too am short, and need to use them behind my back to sit comfortably.
