Convert wood burning fireplace insert to Gas only
Comments (1)A fireplace "insert" is intended to fit into a pre-existing masonry fireplace. I assume you mean a metal factory built "zero clearance" wood burning fireplace for new construction The wood burning fireplace "duct" you mention is a chimney whether it is masonry or metal. You can add gas to the firebox or put a gas log kit in it but the chimney must still be designed for a wood burning fireplace and sized for the fire box opening (unless you want to pay for it to be tested by UL). You need to either try harder to get the chimney offsets to work or use a metal factory built gas fireplace already tested by UL with a B-vent through the roof. Factory built gas fireplaces are made in two types: Direct vent and B-vent. The Direct Vent unit has a double-walled metal vent pipe that can terminate on an outside wall or through the roof. It is a closed system so the fireplace gets combustion air from outside through the outer wall of the vent and the firebox has a fixed glass enclosures. The B-vent unit has a single-walled vent that can only terminate through the roof. The fireplace takes combustion air from the room so it can be open to the room. Many of the units have folding glass doors. Carefully read the instruction for installing the vent. Consider an optional outside air supply duct to the firebox....See MoreGas Fireplace Converted
Comments (1)I'm assuming that the silver protruding circle on the wall that you refer to is the Dante valve. This is used as an easily accessible shut-off valve for the gas supply. What you'll want to do first is make sure that this is completely shut off (turned clockwise). Then make sure that there are no obstructions in your chimney and that your damper can be fully opened before starting a fire. If you have the gas line sticking into the fireplace, and it is black pipe no longer than 3 inches, make sure that it has a threaded pipe cap tightened on it. That should just about cover all the bases. If you're not comfortable doing any of this, please be safe and call a certified chimney sweep company to do an inspection for you. Hope this helps!...See Moreconverting wood fireplace to gas
Comments (1)You can do it cheaply, which is a mistake, or you can do it the right way, and get a direct vent insert, which is energy efficient, safe, and poses no hazard to indoor air quality. Prices vary and installation is a bit complicated, so you need to make sure your installer is capable. Figure about $4 thousand, sometimes a little less, depending on your particular fireplace and installation requirements. To find out more, do a search on this forum for direct vent, and you will find several informative discussions....See MoreCan I convert my gas log fireplace to wood burning?
Comments (1)If you have a complete masonry chimney then you should be able to since the the fireplace itself is firebrick and looks like it was built as such. I would get a chimney sweep in to look at and inspect the chimney before burning. Your local chimney sweep should be able to advise you on putting a starter pipe in as well....See Moreabbey_cny
