A couple more questions about the new format

I've noticed that there's an underline, then gw after my user name, I guess indicating that I came from Gardenweb rather than Houzz. I've also noticed that others don't have that following their user name. I tried to change it by deleting just that little bit, but it told me my user name was already in use. I guess by me. How do I get rid of that? I guess it doesn't really matter, but it bugs me anyway.

Also, once I've posted, the post immediately shows up on the thread, but there's no link to go back to the main cooking forum page. I've just hit the back button. Is that what others do? Is there a better way to go back to the main page?

..there's no need to try and change your user name, but if you want a different screen name then click on 'Your Houzz' top right hand corner, then Edit Profile, and insert in the 'First Name' box any name you want...e.g. Sally2.... zone info or anything else... then click on 'Update' at the bottom... then your screen name will appear like that...

...it can be quite different from your user name....

And just hit the back button. Since there's no preview and post procedure anymore it'll take you right back to the forum without risking duplicate posts.

I second to Kevin's about orchids like sun. I just visited a friend of mine and noticed one of Sharry Baby I gave to him couple years ago was blooming . The bulb is huuuge and plumped , much larger than mine. I don't have a lot of issue growing orchids, or have orchids bloom, just following what it needs mostly of time. But I have never grown orchids that good comparing to my friend. He said he put the orchids outside in the summer under his large Bradford pear tree. The orchids got morning sun and later afternoon sum directly but got filtered sun in most of day time. He said his other orchids collection seems grow better this way too . I kept my orchids on the dry side and don't water my orchids very often. But I do spray /mist my orchids, the potting medium, and outside of the pot( clay) twice a day with water. And spray/mist the leaves especially the back side of the leaves with low strength fertilizer every day. This works well for me so far. I have all my orchids bloomed as they are supposed to be, and have my orchids grow new braches as they are supposed to be... But I will move my orchids outside this summer to see if I can make them grow bigger and better.

New to Hibiscus - Have a couple of questions about ROS

Good morning thegardenat902, Do they need winter protection? I am in zone 5: No your ROS will do quite well on their own in zone 5- if the plants have not had most the summer to establish roots though you can choose to protect them this year with some mulch- either lawn clippings or crushed leaves- then after that they should be established enough to take care of themselves. If you are in a similar zone, when do yours usually leaf out: ROS are late to the spring bud game- mine will leaf out in April-May- and will slowly grow until about June when they go nuts and start to bloom profusely! Does anyone grow any kind of vines up hibiscus: I would not recommend growing vines on the tree as this could choke your plants if the vines take them over. How fast can I expect these to grow: ROS are slow growing usually the first year they are planted while establishing their feeding roots. In their second year they should be established and will grow quite profusely to about 4 ft- Chiffon is similar to Diana in its growth habits and tend to be more vertical in growth. And last does anyone have any full shrub pictures of Rose of Sharon Blue Chiffon or Lavender Chiffon: Attached is a trained lady blue bird tree. Love the Lady blue bird and Chiffon, I have quite a few Diana too. Great bushes/ Trees when trained correctly. During our hot summers the blues burn out to an almost steel grey making the trees look magnificent.

Breads do great in my Bluestar oven. Cookies as well. I'm not a pastry kind of guy, but the drier heat of electric is supposedly better for cakes etc. Pre-heating to 350 degrees is fairly fast, but it takes a while to pre-heat to 450 or 500 degrees. It's never been a problem for me, but if you need fast, you have the turbo.. By the way, the broiler in the oven is very fast, takes maybe 3 minutes to get up to speed and if you leave the door open a crack, it will stay on- if you close the door it will cycle off and on.

I love the format of this site compared to the formats of the other sites I sometimes frequent. I really like the fact that all of the posts are on one "page" and that you automatically start at top and then can just scroll down to the last post. There's still snow a lot of places, so the snow reminds that the weather here could be worse!

There's also a top of page arrow. It's in a grey box in the lower right corner which appears when you've scrolled the links Ann mentioned off the top of the page. If using the back button gives you weird artifacts (which it can do on some browsers), use the arrow and then click "Cooking". Or if your browser gives you an option to make bookmark buttons, you can make a single button that takes you to Cooking and just click that.

What pillog recommends is effectively reloading the page, which is another option.

Technically, using a button is reloading the index page, which gives you the updated list of threads. On old GW, using the back arrow made it easiest to see which threads you'd looked at because it doesn't reload. Using the link does reload, I believe.

I thought the user name and the screen name were the same. Shows what I know. Thanks for the advice.
