Mike_home, is this a good idea? re: thermostat

@mike_home,

You wrote this back in 2012 and I just saw it in a thread someone resurrected.

"mike_home

The
more advanced thermostat are designed to use the outside temperature in
making a decision as to what stage to use. Therefore if you have a mild
fall day, the thermostat should stay in the low stage for a longer
period of time since it should be able to maintain the desired indoor
temperature. On very cold days, the thermostat should switch to high
stage quickly. This is a desirable feature when you are coming out of a
set back period."

I assume the part linked below is the one you are suggesting. I have the Honeywell RTH8320U1008 touchscreen, no wifi. Do you think that this temp sensor would be a good addition to my stat and my Carrier 59TP5 series furnace? to install it would we just run a wire from the thermostat down to the basement and then outside? Nothing needs to be done on the furnace? Will it help with the AC as well as the furnace?

Thanks Mike, you are always so helpful to everybody!
