My Spider Plant Again......

Out of all my plants this one just seems to get everything. It being my first 'real' houseplant you'd think that all the issues have already been issued and it should be the best looking out of all my plants but Nope! It's the only Spider that seems to get brown tips, I dropped it once, All of its leaves bent due to lack of light this winter (which I've now fixed) and now I have this Happening.

I have only seen it happen on this one leaf (first noticed it about a week ago but decided to cut it off today) But since then nothing else has happened. It sits in a South Window with my other Spider and has never had this problem for 3 years (It's not in the window during the summer) I was looking around gardenweb for post like this when I came to one but the plant was alot more affected with all its leaves doing this. I saw Comments suggesting heat Stroke but I don't think that's possible as It's next to a window in the middle of winter and my room never gets above 22 degrees Celsius.... And also it only being on one leaf... I also read it can be from a build up of access salts which I think may be the cause as it's in a desperate need for a repot. Desperate. But I have flushed it once or twice. But yet again It's only one leaf and I havnt seen any others Infected

Anybody have any ideas? Sorry for the text at the bottom..... It won't allow me to type down there without it going all weird and so forth

I would not worry about it if it's just one leaf. Just watch the plant closely for a while and be sure to not over water.

I have a couple leaves of just one small spider pup doing the same thing. I have single pups of about 6 different cultivars all planted in small pots of straight pumice, and all packed together in a wire basket. None of the other plants have it. Mine get several hours of direct sun when it's out (western Oregon), and all are between 32 and 60 degrees. The only possibilities with mine are: sunburn (not likely), fertilizer burn (I fertilize a lot in pumice), or crowding. If one of those is a possibility with yours, we might have found the culprit.

hi, i love spider plants. some people just dont get it because they arent very colorful and showy (my husband being one of those typed that dont get it) anyways, i used to have a nice collection of plants but then we had to vacate our home fairly quickly and i lost most of my plants in the move. im looking on here for anyone who would be willing to share some babies off their plants so that i could get back to collecting? im hoping for it to be possibly considered a gift from one plant lover to another because i dont have much to offer in return but if need be i will offer to crochet a plant hanger for you. ive just started making my own plant hangers, and i dont know how to do macrame yet but i can crochet and they are turning out pretty nice. i hope that i can start my collection back up, i live on a very limited budget because im a stay at home mom so i cant go out and buy what i want, and this would make my day to be able to have lots of plants again. thank you.

Shenanigans_91, You have a 'Bonnie' Spider Plant, which is essentially the curly version to a regular spider plant (curly leaves). The "stems" that the babies grow on are not straight like the regular spider plants, so don't worry. I meant to above, but neglected to support Planto's statement about fluoride. Distilled, rain, and condensate from dehumidifier or A/C are sources of water without that, or chlorination, lime, or any of the other plant-offending substances commonly found in tap water. Spider plants are definitely sensitive to tap water chemicals. I'd always suspected fluoride to be the culprit, combined with the high PH of lime, but have no evidence beyond observation and reading about such things to support that. On the rare occasion I agree with Ken, it's worth noting. Cycling through babies as he described is an excellent way to have good looking potted spider plants, on an indefinite basis. Most plants with transient, non-woody roots are easier to approach that way vs. trying to repot fine, hair-like roots. (And putting the root mass in the ground for summer "as annual" is a great way to use it. Just be careful about doing it for plants that may be hardy where you live, as spider plants are here. When escaped from a pot, in the ground, it's a horrible weed.) Spider plants come from a dry climate, and have been a ubiquitous house plant for too long to support any theories that it's bothered by low humidity in a house (in and of itself, without other negative factors.) Should one be convinced that's the cause for any plant looking poorly, just try to wait it out until summer when it should look better, kind of a seasonal thing. And/or consider that other plants might be better suited to growing in your house. Some plants can genuinely be bothered by low humidity, but there are plenty of plants that are not. (And some plants are bothered by high humidity.) I'd never recommend anyone tenting the babies in particular, or any plant in general because every time I've ever tried it, it ended in moldy disaster. Not saying anyone shouldn't do it, IDK about that, only what I saw when I've tried it, and have nothing to contribute to discussion about it it past this point, but kept typing to say that my agreement with the above doesn't include that part. I know people have used it as a successful technique countless times over many years, for a wide variety of plants.

The paler, variegated sections of the leaves seem to be more sensitive to their environment around them. I would highly recommend rainwater, or reverse osmosis-filtered water. My preference is for collecting and storing up rainwater because it's essentially free. These past couple of days have dumped buckets of rain all over my whole state (Arkansas), as well as many others. I have run out of one gallon bottles to store all of this fresh water in, and I had to go buy some more juice. I like the Sunny D bottles because they have a good handle on them and I can fit six one gallon bottles perfectly into the crates that I store them in out in my garage. I started collecting rainwater for my carnivorous plants, but since then I have began using it to water my other plants that are sensitive to tap water as well, including my Hawaiian spider plant. Since then, all of the problems that I was having with it have all gone away.

Out of the three I bet it would be over crowding. As like you said probably not sun burn and I'm really guilty of under fertilizing my plants. Like real bad. And since it's been in that pot for the same soil for an amount of time I'm to embarrassed to disclose, the roots have probably been way too pot bound for to long

But yet just one leaf.... Weird

i haven't read anything about why crowding sometimes affects only parts of a plant, but my hypothesis is that some roots get girdled or crushed by others, and so the part of the plant fed by the most affected roots is itself the most affected, my little plant has several leaves with the purple-ish striping, but it is in a 2"pot - very crowded.

I don't know whether it's true, but there is an Internet rumoe that chlorine, boron, and other chemicals in tap water are toxic to spider plants. Brown tips are what they usually blame on it, but...maybe. The problem I have with reading something like that on the web is that it gets published in one place, and everyone else copies it whether it is true or not, so just because it's repeated in many places doesn't mean it's true. I'd have to see original research to trust it, but if your problem spreads or continues after reporting, that's something to consider.

I've also read that about the spiders so I leave my water out for 24 hours then water them. But yet I've read that that doesn't do anything either. However I water all my spider plants at the same time with the same water yet Only this one gets the brown leaf tips. And it's been like that for years.

I've also watered my other 'more green' plants with water straight out of the tap, yet nothing occurs.

Weird.

Hopefully it was just a random thing.... Cant wait to repot it in the Spring!
