Layout round 2 - looking for feedback please
Comments (3)Thanks for the advice. It's been a rough week with the baby, so I've hardly had time to get on my computer. Most of my posts are made from my iphone will I'm in motion with the baby. A pass through would be fun, but we have that area in the mudroom slated for built in lockers for the kids. Those were super high on my priority list in our new house, and I cannot imagine letting go of those. :) We're going to change the mudroom door to a pocket door. I'm pretty sure that door will be open 99% of the time, but for the few times we might have someone over from whom we might need to hide bags and coats dumped all over, I think it will be nice to close it off. I think I want to keep the oven where it is because I want to keep it as far away from the traffic pattern as possible. If one of the kids wants to get something from the fridge, I'd rather not have them walk past an oven or cooktop. Definitely going to get rid of the clipped corner at the end of the cabinets. Great idea about the trash in the island across from the main sink. I think we will do that. DW will be moved. It makes sense to me especially if the trash is in the island. I was having problems figuring out trash/DW/silverware layout. (poor KD- I just told him to move it last time and now he gets to move it back!) Rhome- You brought up the microwave. I certainly use it the way you mentioned in prepping. I originally thought that it would go right next to the fridge, but then I read on a website that since MWs are left hinged that it's not best to have it on the immediate left of a fridge or wall. I keep trying to imagine a barrier on my right elbow everytime I use our current OTR MW, and I do see how it could be annoying. It's really hard to tell though. Have you ever heard of that suggestion? Thank you both so much. I know I need to draw up a better picture but I just haven't had a chance. Maybe next week when MIL is here to help. :)...See MoreBack for round 2 - layout help, please
Comments (23)Ok, so things have changed quite a bit since our trip to the appliance store. Convincing him to get the two dishwashers was a breeze. I'm pretty sure that's a done deal. One other thing that we both agreed on was to can the double ovens and get the 48" dual fuel range. It just works better for our scenario. Having the oven below doesn't bother me in the least, and i think it will work best for our situation and for making that wall the centerpiece of the kitchen, which is one of the things we really wanted to do. I am very happy with that decision. two other things we discussed: The second refrigerator in the pantry (similar to what you have...sort of. It would be right behind the one you drew, Rhome, in your scenario. I think this is a good compromise, considering we have such a large pantry. He's pretty indifferent on the layout, but he'd rather not have a prep sink in the island. It does seem like a logical spot for it, but I'm not sure it would be such a bad idea to put it to the right of the stove, next to the fridge. Thoughts? I will say that I generally prep while I cook. I'm not the type that preps everything, then starts cooking, so it might be a good idea to have it on the same wall. Currently I have my prep space between my sink and stove on the same wall and I love the convenience of that. Rhome (or anybody else who wants to play), you like your Electrolux Icon? I'm a little nervous with the not-so-good reviews, but they seem to be improving. Thanks for being patient while it took so long to get back to this thread. We had some very special people to honor this memorial day weekend and it was quite busy! On a side note, I know the linked words in a post are annoying, but I can't bring myself to intentionally type a word wrong so it doesn't link ;)...See MoreLayout, round 2 - need more feedback, please
Comments (3)I am not an expert on clearances at all, so I'll leave that to others. We ended up putting our microwave right next to our fridge, since we mostly use it for heating up leftovers. If you use yours in the same way, that's the spot I'd recommend. We didn't do anything built in, just a small one on the countertop. Will the left side of the island be where you would normally keep cookbooks? Will they be easy to consult there? If so, I'd go with shelves. I see low shelves like that as unlikely to be a "display" focal point, when you are likely to be giving folks some beautiful countertop to look at instead. (Another idea would be a wine rack, if you are red wine drinkers.) If you want to use baskets instead of shelves... I associate the wicker baskets with potato and onion storage. I would look for the kind that slide out on wooden rails, rather than just having baskets that sit in the opening. I have always imagined that the basket would scratch up the wood if you were pulling them out often. If you were doing that use, I'd face them along the galley rather than on the end of the island. There's also a photo floating around here somewhere with an island that has a built-in cubby for a roll of paper towels... it strikes me that you might have a good use for that on that corner of your island, since it's right near the fridge (where spills often start)....See More1980s Kitchen Layout Help: Round 2
Comments (2)I think either design works. It really depends on your own preferences at this point. If it were MY kitchen, I would nix the wall ovens and get a double-oven range. I would rather have more counter space than ovens. Do you have room in the laundry room for an additional oven, if needed when entertaining? If so, I think I would also just consider putting something like a Breville in there. It's not too far to walk for occasional use. If it helps any, we have a beverage center outside of our kitchen for mixed drinks when entertaining and all of our drink glasses (wine, margarita, pilsners, highball, etc.) are stored there. To me, it makes more sense to have the glasses stored where we use and fill them, next to the alcohol and wine, not in the kitchen itself. However, if you are thinking of storing them in the option 2 glass-doored cabinet to the right of the fridge, how about opening the wall on the dining room side and putting glass door on both the kitchen and dining room sides. It would look nice to have glass on both sets of doors and this way you could access the wine glasses for either side. Hope that helps....See Morejunco East Georgia zone 8a
