How do you know when you have too many plants??
Comments (63)Have you ever seen the big tall poles with a propellor on them. They produce energy and for most people who put them in they produce more energy then they use and they start getting a check from the electic company instead of a bill. Problem is for most people the amountof money they are saving is not even close to the cost of the generator. (Est. $10-20,000_ With a bill of $500 dollars a month it would pay for itself in four years and then your electric is essentially free. I don't know about electric heat, but I would imagine you may still need more power than a single wind generator can produce. If you plan on staying in your house for a while it may be a worth while investment. In my case (or my fathers case) it would take too many years for the generator to pay for itself than is worth while for us and we don't have that kind of money upfront. It is easier to pay for the electric bill each month which is a smaller cost than the wind generator even though the long term costs are higher....See MoreHow do you know if you have gnomes inyour garden?
Comments (6)I have a half dozen shears and about as many trowels. Come mid summer, I am hard pressed to find one of either set. Then in the fall, they seem to show up. Right now, I cannot find my knee pads and know they will be found in December. The fact that these things eventually get returned indicates that the gnomes are probably using/borrowing the tools and are honest enough to return them. Now, if I could only get them to do the work in MY gardens........See MoreHow do you know if you have a leak under your slab?
Comments (1)Most slabs and basements always have moisture under them, and moisture slowly moves up through the cement unless there is a very effective moisture barrier under the concrete. A slab poured in 1967 may not have a moisture barrier, so finding moisture under the slab may not mean much about leaks. If its supply lines you are worried about, the simplest way to check is to add a pressure port to the incoming water pipe, with the port on the pipe inside the shutoff valve. Then shut off the house from city water and pressurize the system with air. Let it sit for about 24 hours to see if you get a pressure drop. If it does not hold pressure and you don't have any leaks at fixtures, then you need to work through finding which supply pipe has a leak. Inspectors also test DWV pipe by sealing off all drains and pouring water into the soil stack to create pressure. A sealed DWV system should hold the water and it should not drop. However, this technique may be challenging for a house that is still being used, since you have to seal every drain/exit, usually using an expanding rubber plug. Comments (11)Have you tried cleaning the condenser coils? Dirt that collects on a refrigerator's coils causes the condenser to retain heat, rather than dissipating it, which makes the compressor work harder trying to overcome that. Eventually the condenser gives out from that overwork, but if you clean the coils you can avoid that. There’s a ton of articles and videos on how to do it. Basically you vacuum the dust from the coils, then wipe the coils down for any remaining dust....See More- 11 years ago
