I have to say that self-watering pot worked for me -

I mainly use smaller ceramic self-watering pots for African violets. But I think big ones work too. Water can pass through the ceramic (pottery) because it has many tiny holes.

The trick for me is that initially, you need to have the water container empty. After the roots have filled and dominated the pot, you can leave them in water and they will grow very well.

I so admire the beautiful flowers you grow. I have 3 regular african violets and 1 mini. Only the mini has flowers. The regulars have lots of leaves, but only flower very irregularly.

great! Are these the ceramic kind? I use the self-watering plastic ones from wally world, and they seem to do okay but I have to watch the water levels and not over do it. I read on another post that AVs tend to drink more when they are in bloom. I guess since yours are always in bloom that they have a regular schedule! Nice :-) minibot

I am not sure what kind of cactus you have, but I don't know of any that would like that kind of pot and those conditions. Those pots are meant for African Violets and other things that like constant moisture. Cactus don't! I would transplant and then follow the direction on the cactus foood. I use the Schultz stuff but I hardly ever fertilize and they are fine without. Most don't require a lot of food. If you are going to keep it in that pot to see if it will survive, I guess you could put the fertilizer solution in the pot every 3-4 months and let it leach in like the reg. water does. A lot of the nutrients may get trapped in the ceramic though. Another options would be to get those house plant fert. sticks, cut them in thirds and put 1/3 in every 3-4 months. That way your not pouring water into it that can't get out. I still think your plant won't survive long in a pot like this.

Tawny, they are made by Santino. The one on the left is called Deco, and the right is Arte. I got them from Amazon for $7-10. I'm not sure if I can put a link from another retailer here... Nil, I hope I won't get the problem you mentioned.... Jimmy, thanks for the advice! I saw some at Walmart too. I heard lots of people like the Walmart ones. But they were a bit too big for me for now :( Do you put gravel or something similar on the bottom? I'm thinking I probably don't need any gravel since my mix is pretty gritty.

Nice Plants! I just recently took a trip to another town and found a big beautiful African Violet plant with white blooms. Once it spotted me, it somehow managed to follow me all the way back home. After it went thru all of that trouble, I just had to find a spot for it in my collection.
