Gardening in Heaven
Comments (10)In Heaven, there would be no reason to water, no gophers, deer, or other pests, and no disease. Roses wouldn't need deadheading and would always be in bloom. I suppose their thorns would not scratch our skin, and nothing would grow too big or unruly, or die back. I do wonder how much such a heavenly garden would engage me, though. As a Master Gardener, I'm often asked what will grow without water and care, and I always want to snarl back, "Try plastic." Much of the pleasure of gardening is working with, and sometimes fighting against, the natural world. The intellectual and physical challenge is as important to me as the beauty of the garden itself. Overall, the Sacramento cemetery rose garden is Rose Heaven already. Good quality water for irrigation, loose, fertile soil, plenty of room, few pests, the Sheriff's work crew for heavy labor and the volunteers for working on the roses and providing laughter, conversation and comradeship. It can be much too hot in the summer, and cold, wet and windy in the winter - but a place where roses and friendships thrive is heaven enough for me. Anita...See MoreMy idea of heaven...
Comments (20)And isn't all that beautiful hunting-lodge decor inside a big red POLE BARN? It looks like he just added stuff as he could afford it (terricks favorite bathroom) or found it at a restaurant fixtures salvage store (the store cooler and the cookstove). And that bathroom counter with the cornstarch is IN the bedroom, isn't it? Don't I see the mural in the mirror? And there is no heat, as evidenced by all the electric space heat radiators plugged into those wierdly high outlets. So building codes do not apply to hunting lodges that share a pole barn with recreational vehicles? Check out the lack of spindles on that stairway railing. She shudders. It is the kind of hunting lodge my dad and stepmom would have pieced together if they'd ever had the idea. A thing of nightmares. If this is how it looks when it is being readied for a real estate listing, I am glad I never saw it messy....See MoreBrutuses - I will post easy valance directions later
Comments (20)My3dogs, if you close this thread and look at the top of the list of threads, you'll see a link to the Gallery, and also a link to "Conversations" (which is us talking about non-decor things). Click on Gallery. Please don't start a new thread in there, as every new thread kicks a really great one back to page 2. We have to keep rescuing the great threads which are the room threads and the color threads. After 150 posts they will die and drift away forever. Anyhoo, go to the bedroom thread to post your bedroom, the bathroom thread to post your bath, and so on, if you're willing to put them in there. Hopefully those threads will be around for a long time, serving as an inspiration to everyone. :) You all are also welcome to post any of your favorite saved inspiration pictures in those threads. In fact if you wanted to, your whole house could go into the Cottage Decor thread. (That thread wasn't started by me but I added a few hundred pics to it). Your house is lovely! Anele, I do remember you and thank you! I haven't really been gone from GW -- I've just been posting politics on their "Hot Topics" board. :)...See MorePics Requested by.....brutuses....
Comments (19)Thank you, everyone, for all the compliments. It's extremely rewarding to be able to participate in something which is enjoyed by more than two people. To worthy, I've treated this whole house project as a hobby, kinda. Not only did we get to try our hand at designing a truly custom small house, but I (we) also did much of the work myself, including the plumbing. I hate bad plumbing, and there was only one way of making sure I wouldn't need to revisit that department in the future. I did the entire layout of the bathrooms and the kitchen. The tub surround 'box', and the intallation of the Jacuzzi, including the tile,.... took me forever,.....but I'm sure it will be there longer than 'forever'. The code sez that the Jacuzzi pump, and related plumbing, has to be readily accessable, and that's what led me to use a couple of cabinet doors that snap in, for allowing this quick access. The reason there is no shower enclosure is that my wife insists that it be of 1/2" 'frameless' glass. Needless to say, the quotes were quite high, and I'm still waiting for money to 'come in'. Meanwhile, we use the handheld shower head, and we get by OK. My wife 'soaks' in the tub a couple of times per week (therapy for her back, of course). Speaking of DW (the interior decorator), she finally found just the right settee for our small entry/foyer:...See Moreyayagal
