Heat+oil=dead / wind+ oil= is it safe?

My citrus trees are in my green house and have reached and passed 100F 4 times in 2015. I have passed 90F many time, and any day it is sunny it will pass 85. If the sun comes out in full for 2 hours with my 70F temperature rise I stand to loose the trees. I need to oil spray my trees and have come up with the idea of using a fan to use the greenhouse to heat my house. I can guarantee that the Greenhouse temperature will not pass 85F this way.

But will the light wind do damage with the oil on the trees

That amount of breeze should not be a problem with a horticultural oil spray. As long as you can get the temps down under 85* it should be fine.
Btw, what are you spraying for?

I have so much problems in winter that I oil 1 a month and soap 1 time a week to keep them clear. They always have contorted leaves, cupped leaves, twisted leaves, and mostly perfect leaves no mater how good they grow. It just pays to be careful in to off season for predatory bug eaters.

Companion planting can do much to deter insect problems. I imagine your recipe did a good job on those spider mites. I certainly had a hard time getting rid of those. I think planting a lot of marigolds and chrysanthemums ultimately caused the mites in my garden to go away. Radish and nasturtiums are supposed to be good for keeping borer type insects out of the vegetable plot. I planted Santolina bushes in my strawberry bed. Haven't had a beetle infestation since. I use simple dish soap (not antibacterial soap) to get rid of any serious infestation of aphids. I make up a bucket of soapy water and douse plants, making sure to get the undersides of the leaves. I prefer the bucket method instead of spraying, because it is a very direct attack on the problem. I don't want to kill off any of the beneficial insects I have in my garden, which are green lace wings, ladybugs and preying mantis. Spiders are beneficial in the garden because they eat insects. Some types of wasps can be helpful, such as umbrella wasps. A bird feeder in the vicinity of caterpillar problems would draw birds to notice and feed on the caterpillars. I use large, deep plant saucers of birdseed, which I place on the ground. I don't fill the saucers very full so the birds aren't likely to scatter the seed outside of the saucers.

Bonnie we didnt get the nasty snow but we sure got nailed with the frost. When I was watching the news and saw all of that snow I was VERY happy that all I got was frost :o) Clean??? How did I keep my cast clean you ask ... humm .. I didnt :o) Im sure the doctor is going to have a fit when he sees it. I did manage to take a damp cloth to it and get some of the dirt out but then I grabbed the vaccum and tried to suck the rest out of the little holes :o0 The toothbrush did a pretty good job too. Today will be the really messy adventure .. canna rhizomes and EE's are coming up!!! The big red ones I have are protected by the house and have yet to get any frost damage but I still need to get them out .. and as I said before the Robert Kempt cannas are outta here!! I must say one of my favs this year was the Alocasia odora. I must have more of them next year .. just stunning and they held up well to the wind. My house looks like a jungle .. all of the harmful plants are in the basement ..the remainder are scattered under and around grow lights. I still need to put some "barriers" in the large plants to keep the cats out of them :o) Oh well thats something I can do when its raining all next week :o) I feel sorry for my neighbours who have become accustomed to seeing a jungle as they pass by .. now its just alot of dirt and hostas :o) Laura

Hi Michelle, no, you are not the only one that has been that frightened or upset. A long time ago I posted on here about my having to kill my first rattlesnake, the beejeezus dance I did before and after and how I didn't think I could go past that spot again. Not a pleasant experience, but it had to be done, and of course by me because no one else was home. Since then I've killed many. I don't enjoy it but it's a necessity when you have pets, kids/grandkids and lots of acreage for the snakes to hide out in. Now just in case you or anyone else thinks that's a drastic measure, I assure you it's not. A friend who raises and keeps snakes for a research company taught me a few things about them and one is that they will often return to the same location if it provides water and shelter. If you're growing more than dirt, you'll have plenty of both. So while a spray from a water hose will often work, it may just be temporary. My advice to you is to always be on the lookout for them and have a very sharp flat head shovel at the ready. And don't be afraid of them, they move very slowly and usually away from you. They really want nothing to do with us humans and will go in the opposite direction if they can. Most people are bitten from startling the snakes or from being idiots and messing with them. I do have cats and they will keep the snakes away to some extent. Mine have warned me that one was near, like the one that got IN MY HOUSE! Ah, you should have seen me getting that guy out and onto the back deck, then the dirt, then making a mad dash to find the shovel, hoping Mr. Snake wouldn't scurry under something before I could behead him! Plus, I had to try and keep all three cats away for fear they would get bit. I did more than the beejeezus dance, I tell ya. ; ) My DH likes to say cussing was invented with the advent of plumbing. I say No, it was when the first cavewoman had to kill a snake! lol! So be brave, my friend, keep an eye on your kids at all times and the other one on the lookout for snakes. And keep that shovel sharpened and ready for a beheading. : ) You can do it! Diana

Usually those heaters are 1500 watts. Typically they have two settings, 900W and 600W (meaning a med and a low power setting) with both switches on being high or full power. The result is, on high the maximum heat output is 5,119 BTUÂs. Depending on size of room, insulation factors, # of windows and on how many walls, window quality, storm windows present, heated or unheated space below or above which all effects heat loss and infiltration, the heater may be too small. Keep in mind that a 4x14 floor register, fed by a 6" round pipe with 110 cfm has about the same heat output as your electric radiator. That being said, not knowing the specifics of your room, IÂm positive that your heater is too small, since you say it works fine.

Hey Steve,,With temps that hot and no beneficial insects, it's inevitable to get al kinds of bugs problems..That is why I hate my plants subjected to warm temps this time of the year.I would rather keep them cold and inactive until the beneficial insects are back or a few weeks before I can put them outside and no worry about it)

Make sure to spray not too much oil, use a soapy water spray to rinse off the oil and wait until evening or a cloudy day)

Mike I was not expecting to get temperatures like this until late may when I would be more equipped to deal with it. If I don't allow this heat the soil will cool down possibly bellow 55 F. Next tear I plan to put up an insulated wall on the east and west wall to block some light in the dead of winter. This will decrease heat loss and temperature rises. I would remove the insulated wall to expose the glass wall at the end of February. I also plan to put a fan to blow warm greenhouse air down into the ground to utilize the heat in a heat bank and keep the air from stimulating growth.

Steve, drape some shade cloth either over the Glass or over the trees themselves. That should take care of it. The temps will lower at least 10°.

Yes, that is a great idea Cory!!! That is what I have to do in March or my trees would burn and die.

Steve, you may have to use two fans! One that sends a cool breeze and air movemnet at ground level while another pushes air out into your home up top to ventilate while it fills your home with heat saving on your heating bill..The air movement at your plants level will help allevaie pest and disease issues,,,

Steve, question???? How in the world does all that humidity in there or heat not build up and find it's way under your house siding? That would worry me..If the walls of my home were made of waterproof material, I wouldn't be worried about moist air finding it's way under the siding into the wood structure of my house on that wall...Are you concerned about it and why not?

Yes, I have 4 fans to move the air throughout my greenhouse. I was thinking the same as Mike.

Mike, I agree with you but maybe Steve has thought that out. I made my greenhouse free-standing because I was worried about that.

I have 3 layers of waterproof siding. It came with the house. The glass is colder than the walls of my house so the humidity goes to the glass and condenses. This alone guaranties the safety of my house. The air gets a downward trust both from fan angle and the sloped south facing glass

. This insures the circulation need. Last. The ground is warmer but hovers around 70F on warm days and 60F on cold days. I plan to oil my trees tonight.
