Belinda's dream growing issues around wichita falls, tx

I gave my father in law a cutting I had rooted of Belinda's dream that grew well the year I kept it in a pot down here in Galveston. I took it up there and planted it and it just kept getting smaller and smaller until it has now died. Part of it was he kept moving it and didn't let it get settled, but I was really surprised that it did that. The two grafted ones I have are practically idiot proof and even survived being transplanted in the middle of May.

Does BD need to be grafted to grow well? Does it just have a lazy root system? I know that the climate up there is very different from down here both temperature wise and rain fall and soil. We have clay he has sand, but still, I was really surprised.
