Lykkefund rose as a free standing shrub?

Can Lykkefund rambler work as a huge freestanding shrub in a front yard? Or does it need a tree to climb. How about covering a river slope ? I am just thinking were I want to put it this spring. Any help with ideas would be great.

From looking at the pictures on HMF, it appears that it would do great on a river slope. Also if you have an outbuilding you hate to look at, it appears that it would eat it with no problem. As a free standing shrub, it might eat most of your front yard.

It is a big climber. I don't know about Lykkefund but I do have two big ramblers that I cut back into fairly reasonable sized shrubs. Sometimes this doesn't work when a rose needs to bloom on old wood. I have a friend who grows Lkkefund on a tall post. She doesn't wrap it around but lets it climb to the top and ties it there where it then cascades down. It is amazingly beautiful grown this way.

Nat, I don't mean to throw a monkey wrench into your list but I took out Ducher because I could not keep black spot off of it. Thrips loved it and so did the Japanese beetles. It was an underperformer for me, here in Atlanta. Others love it, so thatÂs just my experience. Gruss An Aachen is a great rose but he needs to be sprayed here if you want him to look good--if not, you're going to see a lot more cane. BUT, he does respond well to occasional spraying and he does bloom even when I let him get spotty. BelindaÂs Dream is also nice but does better with some spray. BTW, her blooms are much larger and more impressive in the cooler weather of the spring and fall. Of the ones youÂve listed, Marie Daly is the most disease resistant and has the most continual bloom. The fragrance also carries on the breezeÂwhich I really like. SdLM is another great rose. Mine does get some BS but with a little shot of anti-fungal spray every now and then, she does well. The blooms are beautiful and smell great. Neither SdLM or MD are very large, thoughÂboth maybe 3.5 to 4 feet tall and wide. What about Duchesse de Brabant? SheÂs on JeanÂs list that you mentioned and she made the Earthkind list in Texas. She has beautiful pink blooms that smell like raspberries to me. Mine is taller than wide but I've heard others report that their DdB are larger. I just went out and would call mine "lightly thorny". Although she does have some thorns, it seems like way less than others like her neighbor, Buff Beauty. Hope this information helps. Here is a link that might be useful: Duchesse de Brabant

Sombreuil as a free-standing shrub

I can only say that my Sombreuil (then called Colonial White by A.R.E.) is not what was sold as LaBiche because when I purchased mine at A.R.E. my sister purchased a LaBiche from them on the same trip there. Here is A.R.E.'s description of Sombreuil on their website: Sombreuil 1880 This healthy but thorny climber was previously sold by us as 'Colonial White.Ã¯Â¿Â½ Its creamy white blooms are very large, flat, and quartered, with a most delicious Tea fragrance. The plant is reportedly free from mildew. This mannerly climber is ideally suited for use as a pillar rose, or training on a low wall, fence, or trellis. 8 to 12 feet I plan a trip there in a couple of weeks and perhaps they have an in-ground planting of Sombreuil which will help me determine if my plant is merely wimpy in size, or if they now have a different Sombreuil. For nice bush form, I like Rosa rugosa rubra (deep pink) and rosa rugosa alba (white). If you like fuller blooms with more petals, then choose the rugosa Roserie de l'Hay. I grew these in Ohio zone 6 and they bloomed early, could manage on relatively little water, and were winter-hardy so I didn't have a lot of cleanup pruning come spring. Roserie de l'Hay grew to 6 feet and almost as wide; marvelous clove scent. The rugosas Sir Thomas Lipton and Hansa are also fragrant and very good bloomers but tend to be more tall and slender; better for hedging than as a specimen. Blanc Double de Coubert is a good performer but the faded blooms cling to the plant and look like (scuse me) dirty Kleenex. Whatever shrub rose you choose, create an 8 to 10 foot wide bed and mulch it well. You need more than just a dinky little mulch circle.

Danish Rosegrowers are actually proud of the Rose Company "Poulsen Roses". Glad to see this broad bushy floribunda rose is doing so well for you Shelley. They are well known for producing cluster flowering roses "From Roses of America, by Stephen Scanniello and Tania Bayard, p. 117:] Floribunda (cluster-flowered) roses are the result of crossing polyanthas and hybrid teas. Much of the original work on floribundas was done by Danish hybridizer D.T. Poulsen, who was attempting to raise roses that would flourish in the harsh winters and short growing seasons of Scandinavia. Poulsen introduced what is considered the first floribunda, 'Rodhatte', in 1912, and his sons Dines and Svend continued his work with this type of rose. According to Bob Bauer "rodhatte" or correct "RÃ¸dhÃ¦tte" has 7400 descendants and counting! I am not sure Poulsen Roses really made the first floribunda rose "Gruss an Aachen" seems to be the first (1909) even though the parentage of that rose is a HP and a HT??? Poulsen Roses have continued to grow roses that are hardy enough to survive our harsh winters (zone 5), and they more than anyone are responsible for the trend of scentless roses that were flowering machines. They have made many awesome roses and I am impressed by the health and vigor of many of the Poulsen Roses. I am even more pleased that they have begun to put emphasis on roses with scent again!!! Poulsen Roses sell more than 30 million roses world wide each year! They have also begun making incredible clematis. And yes I do find some of the names quite funny. And I do find it totally confusing and unnecessary to have different names in different countries.

I grow this and the species helenae rose, both as free-standing shrubs - although they do take up a lot of space and flail about quite dangerously (although I love them). Suspect a bit of discreet support would do much to keep this exuberant rose within bounds. Very flexible and, as you say, good for a trailing situation such as down a hilly bankside.

bman check if Lykkefund is cane hardy in your zone. If not it will be pruned by the cold.

a tough and hardy rose, beloved of Swedes and other Scandinavians - think it would survive the rigours of a Z5 winter

Camps, not all Scandinavia is as cold as you might think. Especially the coastal areas

However, as Lykkefund's parents are R. Helanae and Zéphirne Drouhin and both are "cane" hardy to zone 5, then I think bman should be fine :-)

And btw, good to see your old handle back.
