Book: Natchez Burning

I finished it a few days ago. I remember in another thread where others commented they had read it. I was very dissatisfied with its ending & am wondering what others think. I have learned that it is the 1st book of a planned trilogy, the next 2 yet to be written.

Shouldn't each book in a trilogy be capable of standing alone? I felt like there was too much left dangling in this one. Biggest example is Viola's (the black nurse) death ...THE main mystery from the very first pages... After nearly 800 pages ...????

I felt like Greg Iles might have just grown tired of writing this book & just shut it down. It also felt like, to me, that he was writing the book like it was already a movie...a lot of gratuitous violence.

Interested in others opinions...
