Is there any work being done planting old roses in cemeteries, rather than just preserving what might be there? Annie

Duchesse, two good examples of this are the historic Lynchburg City Cemetery (Lynchburg, VA) and the historic Old Sacramento City Cemetery (Sacramento, CA).

The Sacramento City Cemetery (see link) was neglected for decades. Most of the original plants were lost.
The few that remain have been saved and propagated, but the glory of this garden is the collection of roses found in endangered cemeteries and old gardens throughout California.
They're grown in the Cemetery, where they are protected, and can be studied. Many roses have been re-introduced to commerce from the Cemetery.

One of the really great things about this place (aside from the beauty and the history) is that this is a place you can see Old Roses grown to their full size and beauty.
It's eye-opening.

I think one important thing to remember is that a collection like this one in the cemetery can be created anywhere there is an appropriate space, and enough dedicated people to make it, and care for it.
It's the dedicated people that are the rare element. :-)

I don't think there's a website, but Rev. Doug Seidel has replanted a lot of the roses at a church near Emmaus PA where he had found them when he was a tad younger.
Folks are caring for the roses at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton VA.
Others are caring for the roses at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond VA.
Someone came on here looking for others interested in helping with the roses at a major cemetery in downtown Charlotte NC.

Hmmm, I think I want to visit the cemetery in CHarlotte. I think the ones around where I live don't have roses..they don't want to bother with weedeating around them.
The Natchez Cemetery wrote to me and said they have no knowledge of a rose map, so I guess the thing to do is contact Teri Tillman. My husband grew up with some Tillmans..there was a Dr. Tillman I know. Maybe she is married to one of his old classmates.
The Natchez Cemetery has the angel statue that Greg Iles has a picture of on his book, Turning Angel.

I learned today that there's a 19th-Century cemetery a few miles from here, of which I was unaware.
I can be pretty sure there are no roses there, but there's something else I "collect" from old cemeteries: ART.

The carvings on many mid-19th-Century headstones are exquisite. Well-worth photographing for their beauty as
well as their history.
