Comments (11)Did the floors go down first? It looks like they did, but if not that would be a potential issue with moving the island. Any electrical on that island? Looks like you have a column at the end of the kitchen/bar area. What is in there? Your drawings kind of ignore it, and it looks like you're adding to the length of the kitchen. Can you really? Or were you ending the counters at the column? Is your house built on a slab? Are you adding any sinks to the mudroom or just a wall and cabinets?...See MoreKitchen remodel - change the design or wait for costs to go down?
Comments (4)We haven't done a kitchen in 25 years. It was a much larger project than our current kitchen remodel- back then we added on to the back of our 1912 house, adding a half bath, period appropriate windows, matching existing (small, weird profile) cedar siding, semi-custom cabinets and high end appiances. There was a lot of concrete and wood involved. Felt like we spent a lot back then - $40k, if my memory serves. We've budgeted over double that (includes the 15% buffer for cost overruns/unexpected issues) for a simple removal of existing and not changing the footprint or the windows in this kitchen. We are doing a floor, but this 100-year old house deserves the right wood and the right width, so we bit the bullet and worked that in to our costs. Had to have it milled. We're semi-competent DIYers- always passed inspections on the first round for what we do (moving/installing beams when needed, electrical, insulation, finish trim work). We also do our own demo, which allows us to really get to know any issues up close and personal. These things save us money (or show us where we need to redirect our funds). I don't think costs will go down appreciably. Either put it off a bit longer and save some more or choose different options. Try different cabinet shops. (I'd avoid open shelves - I hate to dust already so I'm not adding to that chore.) RTA cabinets? I'd go that route if I was short on cabinetry funds, but only if one is handy. Other than computers, microwaves and calculators, I'm hard pressed to think of when costs went down on items. Demand is still there....See MoreFull Kitchen Remodel Cost In California
Comments (24)@https://www.houzz.com/user/christine-kim652 I remodeled in Los Angeles and had custom cabinets for kitchen, bathrooms, a wall in my home office and a room divider. The guy also did some miscellaneous stuff like my interior doors which were a custom design. I don't think anyone can give you a ballpark figure because it is going to be dependent on the design including the configuration, the wood species and the door. I will say that I had the guy come back relatively recently to reconfigure the interiors of some of my cabinets. He constructed and installed rollouts for the upper shelves of my pantry to make them more accessible and an additional shelf rollout in one of my bathroom vanity cabinets. He also changed one of the doors in my sink cabinet (the one that held the trash container) so that the door pulled out in one motion instead of how it had been originally configured which was open the door and pull it out. He also had made a custom ceiling medallion for a vintage chandelier. The cost for this - including installation was $1800 - the medallion was $500 so the other stuff was $1300. I wasn't charged tax on the items or the installation nor did I pay tax on any of the cabinets or other stuff he made and installed during the remodel. However, there is sales tax payable for the services of an interior designer in California....See MoreLynne-in-PA
