How would you respond to this neighbor?
Comments (53)First, try to put yourself in the neighbor's shoes. She sees your husband dressed in full Hazmat gear spraying near her property. He probably looked like one of those government men who came to take ET away. That would scare me. People don't want toxic chemicals on their property. She did not know what kind of chemicals you were spraying only that they seemed to require some serious gear to apply. I would write her a note and let her know that it is only a fungicide and your roses require it. Let her know that you don't use it as soil drench. Let her know that all that protection is not really required according to the label, but you and your husband believe in being extra cautious about chemicals. Offer to spray only when she is not there. I spray the same stuff myself and just wear t shirts and shorts. I only have about 10 roses. When I spray I am real careful to only spray down wind. I don't spray the undersides of the leaves or anything above my waist height. On a few occasions, the spray has drifted onto my feet, but I immediately went inside and washed it off with soap. When I am finished I wash and scrub all exposed skin just to be sure. I would rather wear the full gear, but I live in Florida and it is a humid 93 degrees and I would die of heat stroke....See MoreAdvice - Would You Be Upset If . . . [Not Cooking Question]
Comments (36)chase: ''tell us what you decided to do and how much she loved it'' I finished laying out the photobook last night. It starts with my favorite picture on the cover. Then there are paired pictures of she and me, placed side-by-side, as if I were looking at her. These sets of paired pictures are arranged chronologically, at several-year intervals. They show how, as I grew older, each time I looked, I saw an ever more beautiful woman beside me. Between those paired pictures are images of her, which represent the major events in our lives - we met, courted, married, had a daughter, traveled around the world, had a son, and raised (are raising) a family. ''Through my eyes'' is the recurring theme in the book. What I saw the first time I looked at her, and each time after that, as we traveled through life together. The the most recent pair of pictures are recent. Then my favorite picture re-appears as the beginning of a section of ''portraits'' , with several blank pages and a vow to never stop photographing her. It works because that image is genuinely a portrait, while the others have more of a ''candids'' character. I had expected that composing the text would be difficult, but after a week contemplating 20 years of images, by late last night the words were already there. I had some great music on last night - ''Loverman'' by Charlie Parker, ''Gravity'' by John Mayer - which helped. The gift of all of your thoughts, and those of my friends on the KF, also helped. So much, and much more than you can imagine. This photobook will probably be one of the best gifts I've ever made. I believe she will like it very much. But if I'm sleeping on the couch in a few weeks from now, I'll certainly let you know that too. I've taken up a lot of your time on a non-cooking topic, but it was for a good reason. As Becker and Fagen sang, ''I cried when I wrote this song. Sue me if I play too long.'' (Steely Dan, Aja, ''Deacon Blues''.)...See MoreUpset that neighbors dog has no shelter.
Comments (30)annz, cynthia and lily316 What I've been telling you is not a story it is real and it has been killing me for a long time. Its hurts me more when you tell me I'm part of the problem when I've cried and set up nights worried sick but did not know what to do. You don't understand, where we live you don't mess with anyone's things but your own. I have to be very careful because I have a home and family that I have to protect. This person is right beside me. My heart has been so hurt with this that I don't know if I can come back and hear you say its my fault. I understand your hurt because that is what I've been living with only much worse because I have to live beside it and see. Where we live everyone keeps their dogs outside and most chained. I don't like it but that is the way it is. I wish it was not that way. We use to have a dog. We loved her so much. After about 16 years she got sick and died. The vets could not get over how well we took care of her each time we took her for her check up. They always would brag on her. She had regular baths and never without food and good. We did not keep her chained and she was an outside dog but only in the day. We would bring her in the garage in the evening and close the door. If we left for vacation our family came every day to take care of her. We kept a really good very thick bed for her in the garage attached to our home. We would bring her in from time to time. She was our baby. We love animals and take very good care of them. We have a cat that stays in the house with us now. She has never been out. We love her and take the best of care of her. So, we love animals and take them regular to the vet. I'm sorry that you feel that I'm part of the problem. I know you feel for them because I'm just like you. I hope it helps you with your hurt to know when I say we will try to do everything we can for the dogs. There is nothing here to help animals but one animal shelter which in a few days if no one comes to get them they kill them. I know that can be better than living in some cases. I don't think very many people go there to get animals. They were shut down for terrible things they were doing themselves but have now reopened. There is nothing here but the sheriff. It is so different her than other places when it comes to animals. I have family that live in other states and the laws protect their animals as much as people almost. There are so many neighbors all around you but here its not that way I'm the only one beside this owner. If something is done he knows its me. I will come back and let you know....See MoreUsing Neighbor's yard for access
Comments (17)Thanks alyx_c for the head-up about the cable. Wouldn't you know it...our access point would cross buried gas, electricity, and cable/internet? Those are on our side, but not sure if our neighbor's would also be in that vicinity! I asked an arborist to come look at our property for help in looking at our trees and if they would survive the digging. He suggested having 6-8" of mulch temporarily laid in the path of the excavation equipment. He said it would leave less ruts. I wonder if that help avoid losing power or cable. AND what does 6-8" of mulch laid and removed cost in a 7 foot wide area??? It's about 50 feet long from the street! Paradigmdawg -- thanks so much for posting the pic to give me an idea of the damage. Did repair just consist of sod?? Awesome pool! Can I ask what your decking / coping is? Could it be concrete overlay?? That's something I'm looking into recently....See Moreklem1
