Beth, how long have you lived in HB? I used to live in Southern California for many years, and I can remember several Summers with very persistent June gloom that lasted all the way into late July. This year seems to be one of those years where the June gloom is reaching all the way into Riverside - and it's already July. I remember Dallas Raines on channel 7 talking about the persistent "Catalina Eddy". If you look at Sat photos of the ocean off Long Beach, you can actually see the eddy. See . I remember one Summer where it stayed overcast from June all the way into late August along Southern California beaches. Many coastal small shops suffered quite a bit from the drop in clientele. I can still visualize going from 95F in the valley, and driving down Malibu Canyon road right into a deep, dark gray bank of clouds with a wall of drizzle in the middle of July - needless to say, I was happy to drive back home into the valley where it was nice and Summery. Seems we have a cool year to contend with here in California. It's really not unusual. But I tell you, I am sick of the gloom. Yesterday it was drizzling in the Morning, and the sun never came out the entire day. Last Monday the fog didn't clear until 1PM at our house, so we drove up to Bonny doon above the fog where it was sunny and warm. In LA, I think you have to drive up the Angeles Crest Hwy to get out of the gloom, and it's in the 90's up there. Today, the marine layer in LA is 3,000 feet deep, in the Bay area it's 2,500 feet deep, that's a lot of fog and clouds to block out the sun!

Wow!!! This winter has been something eles, the last two weeks here in mid TN we have been down to single digits with wind chills below zero many mornings and go up to only the low teens during the day. I'm more a clematis person then a hydrabgea person, I have over 25 clematis and they can handle the cold even in pots with no protection but I'm kinda new to hydrangea with only having two that have been in the ground two years this coming spring. One is a blue endless summer that has mulch around it, I haven't trimmed any of the steams from last year, but I can't believe any of them would have survived this cold without more protection then just mulch. It will probably have to come back from the crown this spring. The other one I have had for about 4 years, its from a florist shop, a beautiful bright pink, and the first two years it was in a large pot outdoors year round but not cold like this year and it did fine. I put it in the ground two years ago but it hasn't bloomed since being out in the ground, I think I put way to much farm produced cow manure in the hole, I put almost a 5 gal bucket of aged cow poo in the very large hole when I planted it two years ago and it has only been very green and very very lush for the last two years so this year I hope the cow manure has disipated and it will bloom for me this year. I did build a fence around the pink one last fall with chicken wire and then line the chicken wire with cardbaord and then filled in the fence area with about 5 bushel of dry fall leaves and I'm hopeful that privided protection this winter for that one. I think it will be fine. Hurry up spring, I'm done with winter.. I promise not to complain about hot summer weather ever again. Who am I kidding, come July and its' 100 plus outside I'll be complaining its to hottttttt.

Here is something that you might do. If all other things are equal, the area of the supplies (Square inches generally used) should be proportional to the area (square footage generally used) of the rooms they are in. Since this room is over unheated area and you mentioned two large windows and two outside walls. I am guessing this is different from the other two bedrooms that have maybe one outside wall each and may be over finished area. The other side of the coin is that if this bedroom is similarly sized to the others that have one outside wall and are over finished areas the supply for this room should be bigger in the cool room than for those. Thinking of solving the problem, the easiest and least expensive thing to do might be to add insulation under the floor since it is accessible. If the attic is open and easy over that area, that might work too. If there is already a lot there, however, it won't do much good and you will have to look elsewhere for significant improvement.

The current temperature in DC is 32 degrees. Your heat pump should be able to provide enough heat at that temperature. If it can't then the back heat should have turned on and warmed up the house. It sounds like the control board is not wired properly. Does the house have natural gas? If it does then a high efficiency gas furnace could be a could solution for a forced hot air system. Were the original radiators of the house removed by a prior owner?
