Fat Cat Question
Comments (20)Hi Marda, We go through 8 5.5 oz cans of Trader Joe's canned food a day. 4 in the am, 4 in the pm. That's for 8 cats, and leftovers go out for the possums. I could probably taper it down to 3 cans twice a day, but we have one diabetic and he needs to eat, so I worry about running out. And the possums certainly don't mind the extra! I think the amount of food would depend on the ingredients. Higher carb content should be feeding less. They also get 1/2 cup of Evo dry food twice a day. I like the Evo for them - it's high protein, low carb, grain free dry food (50% protein, 22% fat & 7% carbs). It doesn't sound like much, but it's highly concentrated protein & fat so they don't eat as much as they would regular dry food. We measure it out, and when it's gone, it's gone until dinner. I never free feed the dry food. They seem to go in phases. Sometimes the canned food is completely eaten out, other times the dry food is gone first. And some days they eat more than others. Go figure. I think they like the variety. If your cat prefers dry food, you might like to check out the Evo. Here is a link that might be useful: Evo Cat Food...See MoreCat and kitten feeding dilemma
Comments (3)Are you feeding BB Wilderness kitten? Since your adult seems to like the Blue Buffalo kitten, why not switch her to a similar formula BB adult? The only difference should be the fat content as kittens need additional fat for growth. I have a 10 month old kitten who started on BB Wilderness Kitten but I switched him to BB Wilderness Chicken adult about a month ago. The formulations are pretty close, with the kitten having a bit more fat (2% more). I only switched him to adult formula because he's 12 pounds and 18 inches long from nose to base of tail. He's a large cat and is not fat at all but figured he didn't need that additional 2% fat. I had a kitten who lived to be 18 years old who ate nothing but adult kibble from 5 weeks old until he was 16 years old. There's really nothing wrong with feeding a kitten adult kibble once they get their adult teeth in. Heck, I know kittens who munch on dog food!!!! Comments (3)I feed my cat only Wellness, wet and dry. One thing to be aware of is that Wellness recommends phasing in food changes. Don't just switch from one food to another. Stomach problems blamed on Wellness are often caused by switching from one food to another too quickly (I'm not saying that was Sheltiemom's issue). When I got my cat she was being fed something the breeder used. I dumped that into a container and added about 30% more Wellness, then a few weeks later added more, etc., until it was all Wellness. She never had an issue. I know someone who works for the company and they take pet care very seriously. When all the issues came up this past spring they were very responsive. Wellness offers many wet food flavors. I would buy several of the little cans to see what your cat likes. My cat refuses to touch beef or turkey. But she loves the chicken and fish flavors. My vet also says Wysong and Solid Gold are good brands....See MoreMy Kitten is fat... does it have worms?
Comments (8)#1 Get a new vet #2 Get her dewormed and then a follow up worming ten days later. Make sure it includes all types of worms including tape. Some only cover round and hook. #3 Transition her to a QUALITY food. If you can buy it at a grocery store, *Mart, department store, or big box store you DO NOT want to feed it to your pet. If it has color you do not want to feed it. Even though they say they are premium, they are not, they have tons of filler the cat cannot digest, mostly it turns to fat or, if your lucky, just goes through. The best rated foods are Wellness and Natural Balance, PETCO sells both & PetSmart sells Wellness. Feed both dry and canned. Mix canned equal parts water & food and warm in microwave. Most cats do not get enough water. #4 Play with her - get her a laser light, da Bird, toys on a stick and play at least three times a day at least 10-15 minutes - that is your job as her mom! #5 Get her a friend so she has someone to play with when you aren't home. Good luck!...See Moresarah_socal
