Corian backsplash options, which to choose?

Hello!

We are looking at getting new Corian counters to replace the 20 year old white Formica :) I am wondering if we should do the 'coved' back splash or just straight back to the wall?

We do plan to do a tile backsplash either way. Not sure the pros and cons of each and having a hard time finding resources or testimonials for either.

I love an integrated coved backsplash no matter what the material, and Corian has one of the best. Still, unless you're as messy as me (you aren't), it's not really that necessary. I'd go by what appeals to you visually. I'm sure you'll hear that it's a dated look, but not everyone is interested in being current. :)

If you are planning a tiled backsplash also, why do a corian backsplash at all? IMO, it will look much cleaner if the tile comes all the way down to meet the counter. And saves $$ too.

Terible (I feel funny writing that name ;-) ) - We wanted the bling to come in through the granite. That's why either Bianco Antico or Cafe Imperial appeals to me - they have sparkle. I was also considering mini crystal chandeliers as pendants for a more luxurious aspect. The kitchen opens up to the family room which we are redecorating (new furniture, paint, carpet, etc) when we redo the kitchen. Family room: Here's some other pics of rooms in our home, to give you an idea of our style. Most of our rooms still need more furniture and accessories. palimpsest, For the past few hours I've been staring at Wilsonart's SOLICOR color Calcutta Marble, but I have discovered that the "Solicore" feature appears to be a fiction. Wilsonart's website states: "Wilsonart® SOLICOR™ is a specialty laminate created with a solid color core that lets you design visually crisp and stunning spaces by eliminating the disruptive brown line at the edges." This photo clearly shows that Calcutta Marble color is not solid all the way through, even though their website says it is, and edges do in fact show brown lines: Flat cut showing ugly brown lines. Flat cut showing ugly brown lines. Formica also has the "COLOR2CORE" but it's a lie also. Their website says: "Classic flat edge. Your laminate countertops will have the traditional 90-degree flat edges that show a brown line between the top sheet and the edge. The exception to this is solid core laminate that has color throughout, like COLORCORE®2 by Formica Group. You’ll still have the flat edge, but no brown line." I have found images on their website that they use to illustrate a lack of brown edge but it's still there. This link has a section "ColorCore®2 Color-Through Laminate Patterns" and a picture of a large white counter to the right which clearly shows brown lines. On the other hand, apparently it's possible somehow to eliminate the brown lines because this picture from Houzz claims to use an edge called "Aegean" which does not show any brown lines, but I can't find anything about that edge on Formica's website.

It may help you to visualize the pieces together by orienting them in their correct planes. Lay the countertop sample down horizontally, then the backsplash tile should stand vertically behind the back edge of the counter sample with the cabinet sample to the side of the backsplash tile. These are the planes they will be in your kitchen. Backsplash tile looks quite different laying flat. Hopefully you can do this in your own kitchen so the light will be realistic, and not fluorescent lights in the store. I think the grayer or off white tiles might look nicer. White cabinets can be difficult to match to white tile, but you may find a good match that will be your preference. Take a good picture of your samples in your kitchen and let us weigh in! It's going to be beautiful!

@Stephanie - glad you got the feedback you were looking for just in time. We almost went with the plantinum option 4 based on the recommendation of the tile guy. Then we insisted on the samples! Good luck with your project. @Flo - thanks for the offer. Had the paint already on by the time I saw your note. I was between SW pure white, snowbound and alabaster. Had samples made but the backsplash and countertops were already covered up lol. I had a small tile sample to use. Went with Alabaster, I know it has a hint of yellow, but it matched the baseboard and doors in the kitchen which I wasn’t getting painted. I am now second guessing my decision and thinking that I should have done pure white

Several years ago we replaced our laminate with Corian. Going in to the project I wanted the counter straight back to the wall and then tiled on the wall for a clean look; however when the Corian guy came to measure he talked about the ease of cleaning a coved back splash and there wouldn't be any 90 degree corner to keep clean, so I relented and did the coved backsplash. Now I regret it.

Yes, the coved back splash is nice; however there's the extra ledge that the tile sits on top of to keep clean. I would not do the coved backsplash. It would also give it a more modern look.

This is called a "tile cove". It moves the caulk joint from the countertop/backsplash junction and puts it on the wall where there is much less action.

As a countertop fabricator, cove backsplash is one of the most profitable additions to a job. Your fabricator's got some room, believe me.

I've been doing coves for over twenty years and have yet to hear one regret.

If the top is scribed to the wall and the tile cove is applied in the scribed rabbet on the deck, the cove can be flush with the tile. I was just too lazy to do it to mine.

Even better is to mud the walls to flat, again eliminating any lip at the cove.

If the stoners could produce cove cost effectively, I promise you it wouldn't be "dated" any longer.

I saw coved stone in an airport men's room once. Like an animal cruelty video that you can't un-see, I'm still trying to get it out of my head.

Hey Treb--I've never seen the modern one! That cove there would be a no-brainer. I'm still thinking of the 4" tall one of years past.

It's not the cove itself that's considered dated, it's the 4" of countertop at the base of a 'splash (any material) that has been accused of being too '90s.
