I don't think the giant japanese beetles are actually Japanese Beetles. I think, like a lot of insects, all Japanese Beetles are more or less the same size. THere are many, many species of beetles, and most are more or less harmless. One nice thing about the large, night-flying beetles is that they are an important food for large, noctunal predators like Whip-poor-wills and Screech Owls (screech owls eat lots of insects in the summer)

There was a three season show called La Brea that from what I read about Lost might have borrowed a bit for a starting point. It attracted our attention because of its LA-centric starting point - a big sinkhole opens near the La Brea Tarpits and people who fall in find they have travelled back in time 10,000 years. To the same geographic spot but as it was thousands of years earlier, encountering things that existed then but not now. I'll offer no spoilers other than to say that at the start we got sucked in with an interesting story and fast pace. It ultimately ended with a whimper. Some of the actors who began in Season 1 were no longer available for filming and I think those running the show got the go-ahead to bring it to an end (for the sake of the audience) but with an abbreviated and perhaps rewritten Season 3. The first two seasons are worth watching if you can accept a somewhat less satisfactory outcome in Season 3 than might have been hoped for or expected. The story does end.
