Exterior wall insulation

We have a single story, 2400 sqft house in ZIP code 94022. It was built in late 50s. The exterior walls have 7/8" stucco siding over 2x4 studs + half inch of MDF boards. There is absolutely no insulation on any wall. We would like to add insulation to exterior walls.

A commonly used option is to open lots of holes on exterior wall and use some sort of foam to fill the cavities. I don't like that option. Our exterior walls have 16" on center studs, and every 16" section is also divided into 3 or 4 sub-sections by horizontally nailed 2x4s. This means they need to open close to a thousand of holes on stucco to fill cavities with insulation.

There is another option that seems to be frequently used in Europe for old house insulation: using rigid foams on top of stucco, then covering the foam boards with a special, stucco like material. I cannot find that option here. Here is a video: http://youtu.be/bubzyD0tuoI

Does anyone know whether such an option is available in US? Or any other option for insulating exterior walls of an old house? It is not super cold in CA, so 2" of polyiso type board can provide enough insulation.
