I've been meaning to welcome you for a while, Prairie_Rose!

It's a real joy to have you at our Table. I love your posts, and love reading about your ranching in Alberta. What I would really love is to learn more, and see some pictures!

I know that you ranch, and have a hubby and I think 2 grown kids. Any pets or anything else about you we should know about? ;-)

Oops--I just assumed Prairie Rose has been here awhile. Please add my welcome from the icy (but not unbearably frigid) Pennsylvania countryside. :-)

Thanks guys.

Actually I joined way back in 2002. Just went AWOL for about 10 years. You know what it's like, have great plans but life just got in the way! LOL In 2004 I lost my mom to cancer, and my Dad was a wreck. Not long after her death, he had a stroke and I spent most of the next 7 years taking care of him. Work all day, spend some time with him before I came home, then spend time with my hubby didn't leave much time for anything else.

Let's see.....more about me. Tried retiring in 2012. HATED IT. Loved being home doing more with my DH but when the work is done in the day, made for some long winter days.

I now work at Dinosaur Provincial Park, am head of caretaking. I think it the perfect fit for my life, work 7 months of the year, meet people from all over the world who visit the park. And then I get 5 months of down time during the winter. Spend it feeding cows and after chores are done I get to spend time on what I like.

Love to snowshoe! Great exercise, burns about 1000 calories an hour, gets the cardio up and I can go just about where ever I want. When it gets to wet or no snow, I am a walker.

I am a huge football fan, GO STAMPS GO, and my favorite NFL team is the Saints. I am a one team hockey fan, GO FLAMES GO. (can you tell I am a true southern Albertan? Edmonton Who?) LOL I love to crochet, cook and garden.

As for pets, there is Shear Khan the cat. Only cat I know that follows you around like a dog, even comes in the corrals with me when I am graining the calves. And Kobi the wonder dog. Border collie who will chase anything but a cow. Birds, cottonwood fluff, snow flakes, even jet plane trails, but no cows.

I think that about covers it. And I am enjoying meeting all of you.

Oh my. What is a passionate rose lover like you doing in that glacial hell hole? Reading about your endeavors has exhausted me and I haven't even lifted a shovel. I admire your grit and determination, but would love to see you rewarded with thousands of blooms on your rose bushes for all your hard work. I bet they could use engineers in zones 7 to 10!

Just an update. I got a phone call from the bus depot on May 19 saying that my roses came in and that they had been trying to get a hold of me since May 6th and I figured these roses were done. I went down to the bus depot with no expectation that these rose were alive well to my surprise they were alive and doing well. I had ordered two roses and was pleasantly surprised when I saw 4 fairly long cuttings, each about 14" to 16" long with lots of root growth on each. I've potted them up into two gallon containers because of the long root system and they are in the greenhouse how and doing well. Each cutting is starting to send out branches and they are getting nice color green. Will be transplanting into the flower beds once it warms and up and once I find a place to plant them.

On ordering this rose book and when I checked out the book info, imagine my pleasure and disapointment to see that my uncle Walter Schowalter is mentioned. (married to my fathers oldest sister) Pleasure in the fact that I "knew" he was a horticulturist and had worked at the Brooks research center. There is a rose named after him at the Devonian Gardens. A gentle "giant" of a man with a wonderful sense of humor! What a missed opportunity on my behalf to have no interest in gardening when he was still with us and after the funeral I was going through the numerous photo albums on display and said to my mother in sheer dismay that I wish I had this burning interest years ago and could of learned so much from him! We were each given a tree plug to plant which I still walk by and say "Hi uncle Walt" to :) An appropriate poem written by him in 1934 goes like this: My Garden My garden is a cheery place, and there I often go. When I am feeling sad and blue, to banish every woe, I work away my troubles there with pruning shears and hoe. Oh, what a joy it is to walk beneath the apple trees, to hear the thrilling song of birds, the buzzing of the bees. It is not long until I find I'm just as gay as these. Where abouts are you, Wayne? Do you come to Saskatoon ever?(Watrous is even better!) I have four suckered plants that I want to get rid of..but they have already leafed out, so I'm sure they would die if I tried to ship them. If you will be in S'toon in the next little bit, let me know; I'm very willing to dig them out for you and we could meet somewhere. Free of charge! Just in case this happens to work: I'll be in S'toon this Friday. Another option, is if you ever drive on highway 16 up towards S'toon, I live about 15 minutes south on highway 2; I could meet you at the junction(there is a gas station there).

lol...when we had cats, they followed me around the yard and house...the family called them my posse....
sorry but solid red wing fan here!! lol...and the only place where usa is north of Canada, lol....

Welcome back prairierose, I live near Toronto, but have family in Calgary and Edmonton. If I ever get out west to visit, I plan to visit Dinosaur Provincial Park.
