Prairie Peace Rose

Hi all, Ahhh spring, time to find more roses, just got a few Hazeldean roses from Zosel Tree Farm, would like to find a Prairie Peace rose. Can anyone tell me where, thanks.

Good luck finding that one.

Sheila Holmes was the only one selling it on Kijiji. I contacted her last year, none were available, due to cold winter and deer, I contacted her this year, no response, I assume the same problem as the year before.
I wish some Canadian nursery found the way of propagating this rose, as of now, the only way of propagation it is by suckers....

Where abouts are you, Wayne? Do you come to Saskatoon ever?(Watrous is even better!) I have four suckered plants that I want to get rid of..but they have already leafed out, so I'm sure they would die if I tried to ship them. If you will be in S'toon in the next little bit, let me know; I'm very willing to dig them out for you and we could meet somewhere. Free of charge!

Just in case this happens to work: I'll be in S'toon this Friday. Another option, is if you ever drive on highway 16 up towards S'toon, I live about 15 minutes south on highway 2; I could meet you at the junction(there is a gas station there).

Just an update. I got a phone call from the bus depot on May 19 saying that my roses came in and that they had been trying to get a hold of me since May 6th and I figured these roses were done. I went down to the bus depot with no expectation that these rose were alive well to my surprise they were alive and doing well. I had ordered two roses and was pleasantly surprised when I saw 4 fairly long cuttings, each about 14" to 16" long with lots of root growth on each. I've potted them up into two gallon containers because of the long root system and they are in the greenhouse how and doing well. Each cutting is starting to send out branches and they are getting nice color green. Will be transplanting into the flower beds once it warms and up and once I find a place to plant them.

marcia, I am so sorry to hear this! I didn't have a lot of luck with the Morden roses (Morden Blush and Morden Sunrise) before, but the John Davis that I planted last year had NO die back whatsoever and is growing very well already! The Hope for Humanity rose had some die back but is doing fairly well. However, the Morden Belle is something that I am thinking of getting rid of.... over the last 3 years, it had significant die back every year, and also the new branches tend to flop a lot. The roses were not spectacular either. So, in the end, it just survived but not thrived. Since these are all in my yard, I think that it's more to do with the species than me... LOL! Wayne, I am curious to hear about your Double Knockout, as I had a hedge of it in my zone 5 garden before, and it grew as tall as 5 feet and it was an unstoppable blooming machine! Do they really survive in zone 3 then? Marcia, I think that your theory that it was the cold weather after the warm temperature had a lot to do with it. Isn't it such a pain to garden in our FAR NORTH location!? Sigh.....

Diane - if you love roses, you are in the right place! When deadheading, you can either just cut off the spent bud, or you can cut down to the first 5 leaflet - I do the leaflet as I think it gives the plant a more natural shape. I agree with Wayne that the better the soil/conditions, the better it will grow. I had it planted up near my house in a competition free flower bed initially, and it suckered like crazy and was probably 9-ish ft tall. Very large and impressive. But we called it our 'monster rose', it was just too big for the spot, so we moved it out further from the house. I dug up a chunk of grass and planted it there. A MUCH drier spot, more competition, more wind etc. It is growing farrrrr more slowly. I'm going to mulch if properly this year and I've been making an effort to water it a few times per summer in this drought. I think once it gets to a certain size it is more competitive and can take care of itself. What I love about it, is that even in my semi-exposed farm yard, it is 100% cane hardy. Not a bit of dieback. It also has a pretty reddish-orange fall colour. Even when it was acting monstrous, I have never once regretted planting it. It is a amazing rose, it just needs the right spot.

weeper, I live south of Esterhazy, in the Qu'Appelle valley. I should have posted sooner. I will think about this a bit, I don't go to Saskatoon very often, but I have a friend that flies out of there to go to work. I would be content to wait until fall and then pay for shipping, if that would work for you. If you want them gone sooner then I will plan on doing a road trip.

They're crowding a peony and some other plants, so I'm afraid they have to go sooner! I should have dug them last fall, actually... If you don't want them I'll have to give them away locally.

If you are interested though, I can probably keep them where they are for another 3-4 weeks or so.

Do you mean you would go visit your friend in S'toon? If so, I could meet you at the highway 2/16 junction when you are on your way home and bring you the roses then, so they wouldn't have to sit around too long. Sorry this isn't more convenient!

Just make sure you give me some notice so I'm not gone when you come up!

Ok, I will come and get them, my friend lives in Regina and drives to Saskatoon. If you send me an e' mail then we can plan a time that works.
