Can it be incorporated into a smoothie recipe that you do like?

I'd add a little squirt of Fox's U-Bet Black Cherry syrup - available in the Kosher section of grocery stores. It's the same syrup drug stores used to used to flavor cherry Coke fountain drinks.

I find if I simply eat an apple a day I don't need the stuff at all. Any kind of apple. Worth a try? I don't peel them, in case that makes a difference.

I know you don't like the orange stuff but when I took it I added it to milk. Tasted like orange sherbet.

I bet you could come up with a psyllium-laced cracker, cookie or food bar that would be easier to eat than trying to drink it mixed into something. V-8, Very Veggie, or tomato juice may also work better than fruit juice. There are all kinds of gluten-free recipes that use a lot of psyllium. When I make my homemade Kind Bars I add Inulin (a soluble fiber). Kind Bars contain chicory root, which Inulin is extracted from.

Personally, I'd use coconut flour and/or hi-maize resistant starch instead of psyllium.

Sixty-one percent of coconut flour consists of fiber with water, protein, fat, and carbohydrate making up the remaining 39%. Psyllium husks contain 34 percent insoluble fiber and 66 percent soluble fiber while the seeds contain 19 percent fiber and 18.8 percent protein.

The link below has information about hi-maize resistant starch. I buy it by 5# bags from Honeyville Grain and add it to "seemingly" everything.

Edit: The important thing if you take it in baked goods or capsules is to still drink the required amount of water.

What about taking the dissolving fibers like Benefiber? Add it to any liquid, stir and no flavors to deal with.

kd, I'd never heard of that before. I'm not sure about the smoothie bit as I need to drink it right away before it gels...I wonder how "gelled" the smoothie gets. My a.m. smoothie takes me quite awhile to consume. But it's certainly worth a try.

ruthanna, I looked up the cherry syrup. Sounds good, except that it is all fundamentally sugar. What I'd need is the flavoring without the sugar.

yinng and SO, I already eat an apple a day as well as other fruit and lots of veggies including kale at breakfast in my smoothie and veggies for dinner. But I've had bouts of diverticulitis which the psyllium seems to keep at bay.

grainlady, you are always so knowledgable about these things. I really appreciate the input. I'd be concerned about solid fiber though and how much water it might absorb...that's why they're so big on drinking it with a lot of water...I did already run into issues with chia seeds which I now soak before using in my smoothies.

plllog, maybe the capsules are the solution I need...certainly would avoid that awful taste. Drinking water for me is not an issue...

Yes, try the capsules. O the same shelf in the drug store as the yucky stuff.

Can't you mix it into juice - or even chocolate or other flavoured milk(or milk substitute)? Thinking real orange juice would taste way better than the fake stuff...

I take 3 psyllium husk capsules per day. With my morning pills. Works. Use Kirkland, the costco brand. Bottle says "fiber capsules". Some days I have taken only one or two per day. Avoids fussing with smoothies or adding to other things. Makes it simple. Quite palatable. No taste or texture. And done. Perhaps you are stuck with your initial purchase. Depends how much time you want to relegate to psyllium in your life. And fussing.

So today I tried adding a drop of mint flavoring to the mix. It did mask the psyllium taste, but it also tasted like I was drinking mouthwash. Bleccch.

My father would add crumbled up cornbread to it. Here is the recipe I use:

3 tablespoons bacon drippings (or melted butter)
2 eggs
1-1/2 cups yellow corn meal
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1-1/4 cups buttermilk

This cornbread is best baked in a 10-inch cast-iron skillet.

Preheat oven to 450ðF.

Put the bacon drippings or butter in your skillet and let them melt in the oven while the oven is preheating and you're mixing up the batter.

Beat the eggs in a medium bowl until frothy. Add the corn meal, salt, baking soda and baking powder, and stir to thoroughly combine. Add the buttermilk and stir well. Remove the hot pan from the oven. Swirl the pan to make sure it is coated with melted bacon drippings, and pour the bacon drippings into the batter. Stir well to combine.

Pour the batter into the pan, and bake 20 to 25 minutes. Cornbread will begin to pull away from the sides of the pan. Makes 6 servings.

Make sure that you do not use any flour or sugar in this recipe. Cornmeal is sweet enough witho0ut it, and flour would just make it like cake. This is the best kind of cornbread to add to a drink. I've never done it, but my father did all the time.

Metamucil also makes fiber crackers, they've been around a long time. I have to take it for the same condition and it seems to work better than anything. When I get tired of it I sometimes use Benefiber, it's tasteless and goes well with my coffee, tea or even cold water. I used to eat a lot of uncooked vegetables until one day within minutes I thought I would die from the pain, fever and nausea. I mix it with fizzy vit C powder, sometimes with powdered greens.

Lars, while that cornbread recipe sounds just fine, how do you drink a drink with cornbread in it??? And I can't stand the taste now, so I certainly don't want to chew it...bad enough to drink it.

Doesn't Benefiber have some carbs in it?
