What's really funny? All week, I have been saying to my boss, I couldn't live in Russia, as I shiver with my coat on inside, I couldn't live in Russia... (because of the cold). He keeps saying you could live in parts of Russia. But not this part of Russia. No way, no how!!! Not even if I didn't have to eat my vegetables and do get to drink vodka. I'm made for the tropics.

I just wonder why people live there, and what they do all day, what they do for a living.

Yikes! I wonder what these people do for a living. How do they support themselves?

They're probably one of those populations who eat a lot of yogurt and have incredibly long lifespans. Unless the vodka counteracts the yogurt.

Of course they could come to ND to start. Our wind chill factors both this year and last have been running in the 20-40 below 0, and the actual temps way below 0 forever!!!
This morning 2 above! Suppose to go up to almost 30 above end of week--Heat wave! Our problem, lack of snow to insulate us from the frozen ground.

I know I complain about the cold, after all, if you can't complain about the weather, what do you complain about.

But honestly, if you are prepared for it, dress for it, get out and enjoy it, it really isn't that bad.

Last year, Dec. 10th to be exact, it was -49C here, -62C windchill. Our Christmas craft sale was scheduled for that day. I got DH to drive me to the hall with all my stuff, (did not want to leave my car unplugged for 8 hours and freeze up) and I thought this is going to be a waste of my day. Not many are going to venture out in this. Was I wrong!! On of the best craft shows of the season for me.

What I would find depressing is living in an area where the sun doesn't shine much. 3 hour days would be the worse than the cold, IMO.

Prairie rose, where do you live where it is that cold? I think our -20 wind chill is terrible! The temps, I can stand, but I absolutely can not tolerate WIND! ..and we have had so much of it this month. When wind hits my face, I get an immediate sinus pain that lasts for days. Therefore, I have stayed inside for weeks and I appreciate having you friends to chat with....and to top that off, my garage door will not stay down! I had a repair man out twice, cleaned the sensors, but still will not work properly. I hate to see my gas bill, but I like warm....so I keep thermostat at 74 degrees in day and 71 at night.
How are you all coping with this cold?

I will sure be happy to see a sunny sky Thursday, according to my weather app. I agree it has been very gloomy here in Houston.
I keep my thermostat around 68-69 currently and wear layers, I just don't like a hot house. But lately my feet are always cold, diabetes probably contributes. I have on thick socks and always slide into my warm fur lined slippers when I stand up which have thick rubber soles so I should be well insulated. If my feet are cold I feel cold. It's currently 47 in the atrium and 68 where I am sitting. I keep a warm fluffy throw in my chair at all times to be shared by me and my little dog. She has her own heated dog bed too.

I just would never go to places that cold period. I hated the cold weather when we lived in Denver, we didn't stay long. Beautiful places to visit but not my place to live. Lack of sunlight would also be a deal breaker.

I live in Southern Alberta, about 200 km south east of Calgary.

To be honest, last year was the winter from H-ll! Dropped below zero in November, blizzard on the first of December that shut the highways down for three days, and the bitter cold hit. Did warm up in January to the minus 20 to 30 range and never really warmed up above zero until April.

It normally hits in the minus 20 C area from Dec thru March, but normally we will get a thaw or two in that time.

Wind chill is the worse of the two evil colds. Hard to keep all skin covered up and I hate wearing a bellaclava. Find the fabric gets wet and freezes to my face with my breath. Makes it colder, for sure, so I just snuggle deeper into my trapper hat and hood instead. But as long as everything else is covered up and you dress in layers, it really isn't that bad. You get acclimatized to it. And the best way to beat the cold is to embrace the cold.

And we share those """wonderful" "Alberta clippers that they are so gracious to share!!! LOL!! Just 25 miles below the Sask border but like PR said, as long as we layer the clothes etc we seem to survive.

Raven, I recommend Hot Hands brand Toastie-Toes disposable adhesive foot warmers. I go through one or two pair every day, about 7 months a year.

I like the idea of embracing the cold--and in fact am enjoying looking at a recent photo of my daughter and two of her friends, ardent cyclists all, out on their mountain bikes in the snow--but my Raynaud's makes the cold No Fun. The foot warmers save my feet, but keeping my hands from getting damaged is a constant struggle.

Ah marie-ndcal, we love to share. Would hate to keep a really good thing all to ourselves! LOL

Except, it is still cold. ;) Personally I like something above 60 degrees! A co worker of mine always complains she is cold. But she never puts on a long sleeve shirt, or real socks. All she wears for socks are those shorty ones, like I would only wear in the summer. Meanwhile, I wear warm wool socks, and I cut off the cuff from some knee socks when the foot wore out, and I wear them like leg warmers. :) Nice and toasty!

I get cold from the bottom up. This season, I bought new house shoes, no, house boots! Yup, boots.

At least, they are in the shape of boots, fuzzy warm boots, and come up the leg quite a bit, almost to the knees. I can honestly say, they help keep me warm.

When it's minus 40 ... it's the same, whether F or C (that's without the wind chill factor).

It was several degrees below zero C. when I walked over the lane between the garage and the house the other night, where the wind whistles through, and I was really thankful that I wasn`t homeless, that night.

I`ve been rather spoiling myself, keeping the temp about 64 degrees F. this season - in earlier years usually closer to 60.

Today was a glorious very cold, sunny day. I love our winters when they're cold! The roads are dry, and it's sunny. Cloudy, mild winters don't do a thing for me.

We went to the hospital where hubby had his prostate surgery for his 6-month check-up. (Clean). The roads were bare, the sun was shining, and it was -22C. (Thanks to Prairie Rose. She's so nice and generous!)

When we got home this afternoon the apartment was filled with sunshine and was toasty warm. The cats were all out in the livingroom in the rays. My little thermometer said that it was 78F. And the thermostat isn't set anywhere near that.

I'm in Houston also. Maybe I'm just not acclimated yet, but I don't find it too bad. I put a coat, earmuffs, and gloves on to walk the dog. It cut the wet cold breezy feel. I think even with the gray skies, it is less dreary than past winters for me. I keep feeling like it is going to warm up any day now. My flowers are popping back up from the roots.

So glad you are enjoying the Alberta Clipper. Chinook arrived here today, got to -1 this afternoon, 0 tomorrow and on the plus side by Thursday. I will do my very best to shoosh some warmer air your way.

I bought some bootie slip on fuzzy slippers and I keep those in the RV they are so warm. I am going to go this weekend back to bed bath and beyond and get me a couple more pair of those. They are really easy to wear but the sole is not heavy it is a weather coating but I would not wear them out side.
I have a few pair of the UGG boots I love those when I travel.
Today I have on a thick pair of short socks, on top of that I have a really heavy thick knitted pair of slipper socks with the dots on the bottoms and my fluffy slippers. I don't fit into the heavy ones with those thick socks on.

I need to look for those heat up things!
I am actually considering one of those heated mattress pads that are zoned and just have the feet part turned on when we first get in. That is all I would be able to stand, I can not wear socks to bed it drives me nuts. I did look at the battery operated socks at academy sports. All the men have them for hunting and love them. But the battery packs are heavy.

phoggie, release your door spring thingy. Your door will stay down. When you want out, run the button. It will come around and catch the clipper thing and reattach itself to the door gizmo. Run the button again and the door will open. I don't know how you'll close it unless you get out of the car and do it all over again to keep it shut.

This way you can just warm the foot portion of the bed. I have it, only I paid $25 at Walmart. The full-size heated mattress pads are a lot more expensive even in the non-zoned versions. I love this one, although it's the one I mentioned in an earlier thread because it was blinking and had to be unplugged and plugged back in. It still does that sometimes--and so did my heated full-size mattress pad from another manufacturer.
