Superbowl Plans?

Just curious what everyone has planned for tomorrow. We are quite boring, and will be just be hanging out at home, no guests coming over. In our younger days, there were always big parties to go to, but that seems to have faded away.

We will make some delicious nachos, and have a nice dinner. I'm not much of a football fan, so I'll probably just watch bits of the game and commercials. I'm sure my DH and DR will be glued to the TV for hours :-) There are several players for the Seahawks that attended our hometown university, so that is kind of fun. Overall, I just don't get the hype over the game. Maybe I should start betting so it'd be more interesting!

We had plans to head to friends' house for a party, but I don't think we'll be going anywhere because of snow. I'm don't get excited for the game, but was looking forward to seeing everyone.

I get to be Super Bowl free this year! For the first time in, well, ever..... DH is out of town. I will watch something else but may flip channels at the commercials to try to catch some SB commercials and the half time show.

Here I am! I've been busy spending a lot of time on the Kitchen Forum. My hubby has given me permission to redo our 1970's itty-bitty kitchen and the project has taken on a life of its own. I do stop in from time-to-time to peek at everyone's creations. I'll be back as soon as we settle on a floor plan. I found my old post. Letmeg, you just have to go to the page and then do a search with the word "football." Or better yet, scroll down and look at all the cool tables along the way. Use the link to see my table. Then think about these ideas: You should use the colors of your team (I know. I didn't). I like to post a menu for all to see at all my dinners and parties. Maybe put the menu on a poster that's the shape of a football. Or use the little footballs (party favors found at your local party store) to post the names of the snacks you have set out (Touchdown Tacos, First Down Fries, Defensive Line Dip, Wide Receiver Wings, Shotgun Shrimp, etc. ) Place them by each snack. You can make a tablecloth on which to set your snacks. Use green fabric and draw on the 10 yard markers with a paint pen. Doesn't have to be hemmed. Just give it a good going over with the iron. A like to make pennants to hang. Paper and string, that's all it takes. They're easy (cheap if you'd rather just buy them) and I think they add to the team feeling and provide a lot of color. There was a cute and easy cupcake idea I saw on the internet. Makes for an easy dessert, as you don't have to do anything but set them out. And they serve as a decoration before they're eaten. Well, I just got back from plant shopping and it was surreal. The freeway between Seattle and Olympia looks as if something apocalyptic happened - there were virtually NO cars for long stretches. And I figured all the law enforcement folks were parked someplace watching or listening to the game - didn't see one patrol car anywhere. My friend and I were the ONLY customers in a HUGE garden/nursery center after the game started. Then we stopped along the way home to get coffee and there were no customers at one of the largest Starbucks in the area- 3 baristas all to ourselves. I think the superbowl with the local team playing might now be my favorite day, because everything else is MINE! Now if I could only figure out how to make that $350 pine tree I found mine.

Darlene, I also like to make "puffs" and fill them with different things. Ann T makes gougere, which led me to think of making cheese choux dough. I also make a rye based cream puff and fill them with cream cheese and corned beef for a Rueben type filling. I've made them with seafood salad, BBQ'd chicken, anything that will fit into the small "puffs". I make them small, just a couple of bites, so the filling isn't running all over. Another small finger type sandwich is sweet potato biscuits with a sliver of ham, very yummy and just a couple of bites which can be eaten while watching the game and they aren't very messy. When making the cheese puffs (La Gougere) you can make small puffs instead of the big one and bake for less time. Reuben Puffs 1 cup water 1/2 cup butter, cubed 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup rye flour 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 eggs Caraway seeds CORNED BEEF FILLING: 2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 2 packages (2 ounces each) thinly sliced deli corned beef, chopped 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons minced chives 2 tablespoons diced onion 1 teaspoon spicy brown or horseradish mustard 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder 10 small pimiento-stuffed olives, chopped In a large saucepan over medium heat, bring water and butter to a boil. Add the flours, parsley, garlic powder and salt all at once; stir until a smooth balls forms. Remove from the heat; let stand for 5 minutes. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Beat until smooth. Drop batter by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 in. apart onto greased baking sheets. Sprinkle with caraway. Bake at 400ÃÂ° for 18-20 minutes or until golden. Remove to wire racks. Immediately cut a slit in each puff to allow steam to escape; cool. In a large bowl, combine the first eight filling ingredients. Stir in olives. Split puffs; add filling. Refrigerate or eat immediately. Makes 4 dozen La Gougere Ann T La Gougere ========== 1 cup water (or half milk/half water) 1/3 cup butter 1/2 teaspoon salt fresh grated nutmeg cayenne pepper 1 cup flour 4 eggs 1 tablespoon Dijon Mustard 1 cup gruyere cheese 1 tsp milk extra cheese for top Bring the water/milk to a boil and add butter. When butter has melted remove pan from heat and add flour, salt, cayenne, nutmeg, pepper and stir vigorously with a big wooden spoon. The mixture should come away from the sides of the pan and form a ball. Place mixture in the bowl of a large mixer and add one egg at a time beating well, After you add last egg continue to beat well. Mixture will be shiny. Add Dijon mustard and taste for seasoning. Adjust to your taste. Add coarsely grated cheese. Butter a large cookie sheet and flour. Draw a small circle in the flour (about 2 inches wide) and proceed to drop the dough by tablespoon full around the outside of this hole, making a ring, or a crown. Dough...

This chart is from 2013 and shows the percentage allocation of various rooms for new builds. I will have about 2200 square feet on the main floor and 2000 finished in the basement. At only 16*16, my master bedroom is small according to this chart...however that is in part due to we chose not to have a separate “sitting area” as we will have the master deck to serve that purpose 9+ months out of the year. DH actually wanted a full wrap around porch. That is the only thing I vetoed. (He did not want a deck blocking his living room view though). I would imagine he will hang out in the master deck a lot watching for wildlife. For a 3,000+ finished home, it shows a master bathroom of 210 sq feet, mine is 194. For the same size home, it shows closet space of 201. That is about the size of both master closets. I would assume that the 201 must mean ALL closet space in the house. I am hoping for 5*8 closets in each kids rooms as I like to keep most of their toys organized in the closets. That would be 120 sq feet right there....so I may be over the closet sq footage, but Considering most homes lack storage, I am not worried there! My closet is probably the only one that is truly questionable. But I know lots of gals truly enjoy a nice closet space. I doubt I am taking away anything from my husbands’ life by having some extra space here. My pantry space is way out of whack also, but given that we will have a huge garden plus an orchard, I will actually need a basement pantry or an outside root cellar. The only room that we want that we may not get a dedicated space for is an exercise room. I am hoping the basement works to get a defined space for that, but it may get merged with the guest bedroom. We could get it by making the kids rooms smaller. But our current house has a 13*16 room that we turned into a bedroom for our oldest. It is such an awesome space! Our kids have friends over often, and we want them to be able to hang out with large groups in their own rooms (if that is where they want to be). Later, the barn will serve this purpose during warmer weather. In the few years we have been here, my oldest has had 10 girls sleepover each birthday. Her room was large enough to have all those girls have a blast. I am one of the few moms I know who allows that many to stay over. (DH hides in the cabin!). I would imagine my youngest will have a minimum of 15 for her sleepovers when we build. There are 3 times as many girls in her grade and she is more socially active. So I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t have a 20+ group for a birthday sleepover. I can’t wait to have the space for that!

My DS just informed me we also need to watch the Puppy Bowl, with a halftime show with "Kitty Perry", on Animal Planet. LOL, that may be more entertaining.

Shee, is there a big storm? Are you in the Midwest?

We always go to our best friends place for the big game day party. Everyone brings food and drinks. Being much more of a college football fan, if the Detroit Lions aren't playing, I really don't care who wins. But, the festiveness and fun of the day with good friends and good food- along with the Super Bowl ads - always makes for a fun time.

This year for the first time in ages, I will not be hosting or hosted for a SB party. However, there will be wings and things at our house. I've vowed to watch the commercials and half time shows and to record the Puppy Bowl since I never seem to catch them when at a party.

"What is a superbowl?" Lol, Arcy Ã°ÂÂÂ. If the Super Bowl was being held in my backyard I would not glance out the window.

Is it a bit weird that so many people watch a game with such high money stakes just for the commercials?

I did watch last year's half time show on YouTube after there was so much discussion everywhere about it, and was very disappointed to see Madonna basically just stomping from one end of a stage to the other, back and forth repeatedly. And I Finally saw Nikki Minaj (had never seen or heard of her before last year, where have I been?) and was dismayed at how unattractive and talentless she is.

A whole day of this seems like a relentless assault on the senses......I think people who watch the Super Bowl should get the next day off from work to recuperate!

I was supposed to go up to Boston for a SB party, but due to the weather, I'll light a fire and stay home, which is fine with me too.

I have the great good fortune to have found and married seemingly the only man in America who has -zero- interest in organized sports. That's made a huge and positive impact on our lives together in that since neither of us has an iota of urge to watch football we can skip all the relentless marketing hype and do whatever we usually do on a Sunday :).

Now, if they powers that be ever gin up a Super-canoe bowl, or a Super-scuba bowl...I may be in trouble!

The only part I skip is half-time, esp. this year with Katy Perry, who IMO screams rather than sings.

There is definitely all the extraneous nonsense with these big moneymaking sports. Money ruins everything. The hype, the commercialismÃ¢ÂÂ¦think Christmas! But underneath the garbage is some very interesting elements of sports, just like despite the commercialism, tackiness, etc., of Christmas now is the beauty of the lights and the music and the meaning.

The strategies, the plays can be amazing, the scheming, the unexpected, the amazing feats of the human body and human mindÃ¢ÂÂ¦think the Greeks/Olympus. That's why I love sports.

What drive me nuts, though, is when grown men dress like little boys to go to and watch these games. Imagine if women dressed up like figure skaters to watch a figure skating competition! We'd be carted away, tutus and all.

I look at old-time photographs of crowds at baseball games, (and others sports) The men are all in suits! (and there are no women! So at least one thing has improved).

But the game itself is fascinating.

We are huge Boston sports fans, so of course we will be watching today's game and rooting for the Pats. After DHs PT session around 1:00 today, I'll find out if I need to jump in the car to drive to Boston. I'm hoping the discharge is quick so we can get back home in time to watch some of the pre-game show.

We used to always host a pretty big Super Bowl party, but once we started traveling back and forth to NH on weekends it sort of fizzled out.

Since our team (Go Patriots!) is playing, we'll head home early today. I thought DS's friends were coming to watch, but I think he doesn't want to have to talk to anyone...LOL. So we may have extra wings and nachos.

It is all over the top and all of the hype is ridiculous. We do love a good football game though. :)

The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article a few years back on how much time the ball is actually in play during a NFL game. My football addicted brothers were stunned with the statistics.

The average game clocks in around 3 hours (174 minutes according to the WSJ).

The average amount of time that the ball is in play on the field is 11 minutes. That's timed from when the ball is snapped to when the play is whistled dead by the ref. That leaves so much more time for commercials.

I feel bad that we do not watch sport or have cable. I think for the next olympics I will get cable so the kids can see that.

I have been working on a presentation that WAS due EOD MOnday and then was moved up to 4pm today. I didnt get why everyone was in a rush for 4pm till someone reminded me of the superbowl! no wonder they are in a rush.

It has not been a fun weekend since my DH has been sick for a week and is on meds that make him dizzy and nauseous and DS#2 that is 2 has had a high fever. That would have been fine is I didnt have this presentation to get done :P

Since I came into this world the same Fall as my beloved MN-Vikings (1961)...I've been addicted to Football & the NFL! It's in my blood, & is my 2nd religion...;-)

Even though my HS-Football injury (Fall '78) eventually led to my new knee last Sept. (wow...36yrs ago!!!), I love the sport even more. Can't imagine being without it! If I had Sons, I would've been gently pushing them to play...if they liked it. And no...I'm NOT one of those PSYCHO sports parents!

Can't wait for the new MN-Vikings Stadium to open for the 2016 season in downtown Minneapolis!!!!! I WILL be there!

2018 Super-Bowl is in Minneapolis too!!

This year I have no interest at all. We are closer to NE but they are big rivals of Buffalo so I don't want them to win. We even have a local connection with a member of NE but I still don't want them to win! The Seahawks are on the other side of the county and I can't relate. But I have to lean their way as I so very much hate Tom Brady.

While I'm see her picture I have never heard Katy Perry sing and I really don't think I will like it.

The kids are going to parties so its just DH and I. Not even excited to order pizza.

Going to a Super Bowl Party! All the kids play football in the yard until the game starts! I mean, how is that not fun??? (LOL!) Watching and cheering and being loud is sometimes fun and football brings all that out and it's one of the times it's okay to go crazy!

Kids are just tired the next day at school, but it's expected, and teachers know it, around here, anyway!

I only follow football very vaguely, but I always watch the Superbowl. It's a national holiday! Beer + chips all by myself. happy!

We'll be watching because DH loves football, and I enjoy sports too, although college football is more my thing. I enjoy the strategies, the athleticism, and the competition. We were hoping for another team to make it to the finals but will probably root for Seattle. Although I have a favorite player or two on the Pats.

I put on a big pot of chile in the slow cooker this morning, will make nachos and some potato skins and call it done. It's dreary, rainy here and about to get cold again.

I like the commercials and will watch the half-time show too, but am not a huge Katy Perry fan. Aerosmith and Tom Petty were a couple of my favorites a few years back.

Tibbrix, I too remember the days when we dressed up to go to college games. At UA I recall putting on heels of all things to go to games and the guys wore jackets & ties. Now it's a lot more casual when we do go and we wear our team colors, but the whole ridiculous thing with crazy garb is beyond me.

I'd rather be poked in the eye with a sharp stick than watch football. Actually, a poke would be preferable to any sport, including the Olympics. I just don't get it but to each, their own.

We used to go to a party that had plenty of people, like me, that were only interested in the socializing. I had the chance to visit with people I'd only see at this party. But as the years went by the party got smaller and smaller until the last time when it was me and 3 men (including my husband) who were interested in the game. Oye, it was boring.

Since the parties have stopped, we'll be home with my husband watching and me not watching.

Marie_cate, that article is fascinating. My husband guessed it was 22 minutes of play.

I'm with hh on sports, but we have two families coming over to watch the game and eat a lot of junk food. I don't follow the game, but I love my friends. :)

Jlc - No, not in the midwest. We were supposed to get around 8" (during the game), but think we saw less. The back roads would have been less than unpleasant.

I did watch any of it. Enjoyed some cheesecake and worked on making a faux roman shade. DH was happy with the outcome.
