Siding Going up Tomorrow. Need Help Quick!

I just went by our property and saw some terrible looking boards and battens and plank. It did not say Hardie on one piece of anything. I find that odd. The company we are using has to order the Hardie and was trying to talk us into something they have in stock that is less than par.

If anyone has any idea if this could be hardie and just not labeled as such?

I would appreciate it big time!!

I would question your builder. We had two houses built in Florida and neither one did what they promised.

Thanks for your suggestions. To test how it looked I just laid it over a solid colored sheet. I would plan on buying something darker underneath for more contrast. A thin bedspread would be ideal: I am planning to use this in the summer. I was thinking about whether I would ever be able to find shams that went with it. The odds of finding the same crochet pattern are next to nothing. So, how would I best coordinate them? I can sew (not that I donÃ¢ÂÂt have too many projects going as it is). Whether I bought or made something, what look do you think I should be going for? To match the ivory of the crochet, or create a color contrast? I find in daily use, I almost never put my shams on. But that is on a bed made with a bedspread, where I donÃ¢ÂÂt have to, and it still looks made. Thanks again.

I'm right at the same stage, and I had researched the issue obsessively because of seeing posts here and on the john bridge forum about how, exactly, the durock meets the flange (in my case on a Kohler shower base, but it seems very similar). Catmom posted about her husband's experience with the shower base, so you might search for that. It seems there are 2 approaches: fur out the studs as Kohler suggests, or notch the studs so the durock sits right above the flange. You also need to make sure the waterproof barrier (black plastic in my case) goes behind the durock, and overlaps the flange enough so it can get trimmed and then siliconed to the edge of the durock. I believe that the tile will extend slightly below the bottom edge of the durock, so you'll kind of curl the black plastic up behind the tile and sealing it to the flange. So far, my guys seem to have done it correctly. As for the second question, I think you just need to ask them to trim and remove the durock. I think they assume you want to tile all the way to the door frame, if I'm interpreting your photo correctly. I'm no expert, but I hope my explanation makes sense! Good luck today.

Thanks for your suggestions. Kew2006, the bed looks so Ã¢ÂÂundressedÃ¢ÂÂ with the pillows exposed, though. Normally they are covered with my bedspread. I find in daily use, I almost never put my shams on. But since I have been using a bedspread, and making the bed is so quick and easy, normally I donÃ¢ÂÂt have to and the bed still looks well made. I would probably have to stop using 100% cotton, as they always look rumpled. When I was trying to take a nice looking photo in a hurry, I really noticed that. I would plan on buying something darker underneath for more contrast. Probably royal blue or a darker green, as that would go with the curtains (open to suggestions!). The dust ruffle is a burgundy-brown taffeta. The bed is an antique and high:, finding a dust ruffle that was deep enough took years, so I think whatever I choose for underneath needs to go with this. A thin bedspread would be ideal: I am planning to use this in the summer. How would it look, you think, with the dark bedspread over the pillows and the coverlet just laid sideways as in the middle set of pictures? No shams at all? Thanks again.

You will be fine living without a backsplash at all for a bit. If you are trying to decide, in a hurry, for the sake of having one you may make the wrong choice for you. Don't go with the 4" backsplash. Paint the wall behind the counter the same color as your room for now and take some time to decide what you really want. Your wall shouldn't get damaged at all. Once the countertop is installed you might have a better idea of what you want. then you can post a picture and get some different ideas here. Slow down, take a deep breath, you have time.

I spoke with my rep and he said it was in fact hardie. It is a goldish color. So, I think it is. I am just paranoid.

Oops I did take a pic. It is close up bc I wanted to check out the code. No luck there. We are the general contractors, although we have a builder and know our framer well. I trust he will know (hopefully) if it is or is not hardie. The photo is likely that back side.

The back of our Hardie looks very similar to your photo.

Thanks Dekeoboe! I think I am ok. I just get these moments of freaking out. It is hard to trust ppl (for me) and I am always watching for mistakes. Which I think is a good thing. It probably makes our contractors hate me though. lol

If you are the general contractor you are simply doing your job and the subs should respect that or at least expect it. You should have received written evidence that the material complied with the contract and the building code before it arrived on site.

By the way, the numbers on the back of the siding contain "NER 405" which is the building code required ICC-ES Legacy Report number for James Hardie siding.

Thank you renovator8! I appreciate the link and info. Yes, I should be particular and ask a lot of questions. Also, I should have been there. Good thing I checked yesterday before it went up to make sure it was the hardie and the smooth texture we asked for.

aktillery, Im exactly the same way! Good luck! FWIW, our siding is supposed to go up today, too, but so far it's pouring. It's been sitting in the yard for a month :-(

Kiwi, that stinks! We are to have rain off and on this week. Today is nice but for the most part it will rain off and on the entire week. I have door coming and hate that they will sit in a unlocked/open house and might get stolen. Building can be stressful! I hope your weather improves soon!

To provide quality control on a project, the Contractor - Subcontractor agreements need to include this kind of clause:

"Subcontractor shall submit, as promptly as is practicable any shop drawings, construction data, product information, material samples, and similar submittals, upon request of the Contractor."

That request list should be issued early in the job and include code controlled and proprietary materials and it is your responsibility as the GC issue it. If an experienced builder is advising you he isn't doing his job.

I find that knowing the subs well can be an advantage but it can also invite sloppy quality control procedures. One of the things I find odd about house construction projects compared to larger projects is that quality control and assurance procedures are rarely enforced if used at all. I see a lot of pain on the GW forums because of it.
