Two single ovens versus one double oven
Comments (7)I wish I had gone with two single ovens and a range top. I think you got great bang for your buck with the Elux ovens that you would not get from a range. I like the idea of choosing each component as your best choice instead if a range which might have your best choice of burners but not oven or vice versa. If something goes wrong with one part, you are not stuck replacing a whole range. I am currently in that situation. By having two separate ovens, if something goes wrong with one you still have the other one. If you had double ovens you might be out of luck. You also have the ovens at optimal height. Our neighborhood is similar to yours and I know I have a kitchen that is very different but I plan to live here and use it so I don't really care if I will get it back in resale. Comments (5)I am surviving with just one combi steam oven in the kitchen, no full size oven, no warming drawer, but there is an occasionally used microwave. So my vote would be for a combi oven, an oven, and a warming drawer. If you go with large warming drawer, with planning, there should be quite a lot of space to keep cooked food warm. Combi oven can hold quite a decent amount of food, particularly in steaming mode where all the shelves can be filled with food. Comparing steaming with stove top, it is far more convenience to steam a large portion in the combi oven. Being able to control steaming temperature at lower than boiling point really benefits delicate food such as fish, shell fish, and other seafood. A steamed whole fish ~2lb, is a weekly dish, and it is easier to cook it along with some other vegetables in the combi oven in one go. For very small portion steaming (such as blanching greens before stir frying, or two boiled/steamed eggs), however, I would still opt for induction with a pot and a basket, or a pressure cooker, because it is much faster and more energy efficient. Regenerate/Reheat function alone is a big selling point. Comments (6)H202, I went through a similar quandary myself. How often do I need double ovens? Do I want to bend over with a bad back and neck today to pick up a dutch oven with chicken or a roast in it? How about a monster turkey or huge ham when I am even older? I ended up taking an unconventional path. After having a stand alone oven mounted beneath the countertop (what was I thinking - young and inexperienced) I soon learned the value of a wall oven. So, how about a wall oven and a standard stove with oven? That gives you a main oven at easy waist level and special occasion casserole/cake/bread/etc. oven below your cooktop. The other option if you can give up the wall space is a wall oven and separate steam oven both at a waist level. I'm not a fan of double ovens stacked in a single unit but, side-by-side setups are sweet. The standard steam ovens are generally the European "20 inch" size stuffed into either a 27" or 30" oven shell. The Gaggenau Wall Oven and Steam Oven side-by-side I saw was to die for other than the wasted space for the steam oven cavity to have matching fronts. Comments (5)So you're 65" and the top of the steam oven would be at 63"? That should be fine. Optimal height for an oven is centered to your waist so you can lock your forearms parallel to the floor, where you have a lot of tension and stability, for transferring heavy and awkward pots, etc. Acceptable height is anywhere from centered on hips to centered on shoulders. Your steam oven height sounds centered on your shoulders and in the good zone for your husband. I had to compromise to get what worked best for me. I'm the oven user, and I do use them, but I couldn't get both in optimal placements. I chose to have the lower oven as high as possible, after I couldn't find the two more inches it would have required to put them side by side (and since the Gaggenaus were designed to be stacked, they would have also looked goofy like that, and I didn't have an option to put them in different spots) because that's what works best for me. The bottom of the combi-steam is at my shoulders, which is potentially dangerous, and for which I'm very careful.
