I have had many pepper grinders over the years but none have been better than the Unicorn Pepper grinder.

Recommended to me years ago by Jessica.

Might not be the prettiest grinder but it out performs every other pepper grinder I've ever had.

I'd recommend the Magnum plus. Easy to fill and holds a large quantity. I use a lot of pepper so I like that I don't have to fill it often.

I have a Unicorn Magnum--have owned it several years. Works great--love it. Wish that I had gotten the Magnum Plus. I love fresh ground black pepper and use a lot of it. Grinds pepper very quickly, too. No more of that laborious twisting & twisting & twisting to get enough pepper into the chili pot. The only problem with the Magnum is that somehow, by the way that I use it, I was always sliding the loading ring into an open position & the peppercorns would go flying. So, I keep it wrapped shut with black electrical tape.

I suspect that would be less of a problem with the Magnum Plus just because it's larger and there is more surface to hold onto. And may not even be a problem to start with because I think I'm doing something stupid when I use it. A natural talent of mine, it seems.

What about the kind made from acrylic?

I have 1 , but have never used the salt part, preferring a covered, flip top salt shaker in our high humidity climate. The pepper part has lasted me well over a decade, tho...

I have Atlas. The blurbs says, "Fitted food safe nylon liner protects mill from corrosive salt." Mine is only a few years old, but it shows no signs of corrosion (I've had the pepper at least five years longer). They're gorgeous and meant to last a lifetime, so ask again in 10 years. :) Best pepper mill ever. It actually grinds the pepper, rather than cracking it, so that it's really even, and can be adjusted to very fine.

These come in brass, copper, chrome, and combinations, and in in sizes from 5" to 11", salt and pepper sold separately.

Peugeot apparently uses a steel mechanism with a special coating for their salt grinders. But most salt grinders have a ceramic grinder rather than steel. Salt will corrode a steel grinder.

I use the Oxo Good Grips salt grinder, but we seldom add salt at the table, and the same is true of pepper. I have a brass Turkish coffee grinder that I use most of the time, but it is not adjustable and only makes a medium-fine grind. I also have a Trudeau pepper mill that I like and have had for many years, as well as a Kuhn Rikon vase grinder for pepper, which goes well with the Oxo salt grinder, although they do not match exactly, although I do put those on the dining table.

I tend to use chilies instead of black pepper, and so I do not go through a lot of black pepper. I do use black pepper with dill and lemon when I do not want the flavors or dill and lemon to be overpowered, and I use it in other more delicately flavored dishes, such as hummus, potatoes, vegetables, and vinaigrette salad dressing. For intensely flavored dishes, I prefer to use the Habanero sauce I make or chilies from my yard.

I have a Marlux, made in France, that I bought as a new bride in 1961. ItâÂÂs a wooden teardrop about 9â tall. I remember my then husband was really upset that I spent $45.00 on a pepper grinder. You can see why I didnâÂÂt keep him long! The grinder still looks and works just like the day I bought it 54 years ago.

Partst - according to the linked calculator, $45 in 1961 would be $477 today. For a pepper grinder? He mightn't have been perfect, but I'd give him some slack for that objection! And I LOVE pepper!!! ;-)

carolb_w_fl, I've been using an acrylic combo shaker/grinder for years, but even with the "protective nylon sleeve" and my careful handling, the steel threading always starts to corrode after a couple years and I have to replace it. I'm sure it's due to the few days of extreme humidity we seem to get every summer.... the kind of humidity where salt absorbs moisture, weeps, and then solidifies. lol!

partst, I'll try to research the Marlux just out of curiosity, but I don't plan to spend FOAS's adjusted cost of $477 today. lol! And, actually, given that I have to replace my shaker/grinder every few years, I probably won't be far from spending that adjusted $477... especially if I wait the 54 years. :O)

It was painful!

Boxed in my attic, I have my Apple II computer, cost me in today's money $19,000 with floppy drives. Still in working condition.

I remember my first 12" color monitor, cost me $6,700 in today's money. Color graphics card, another $4,800. Software for the system? I don't want to remember!!! LOL!

I use a stainless steel battery pepper grinder (push the button) and I love that. But no thanks to a salt grinder. I tried it and did not like it.

So I use the iodized Sea Salt in the normal round container in a good old fashioned salt shaker.

Found out the hard way that sea salt does not give your body the iodine that it needs. Actually wound up in a rush trip to the emergency room over that. It was a revelation to me.

Yeah. I've seen reports from New Zealand of people getting goiter because they eschew the iodized salt. I use sea salt in a grinder, or occasionally Himalayan or flor de sel, for finishing or non-cooked things, but for the most part I use iodized Morton's. I have enough thyroid issues without that!
