I've a new, I'll call it annoyance, Avast, FF and Slate

I've a new, I'll call it an annoyance: Avast gives me this message:
''Web Shield has blocked... certificate revoked...idvisitor.slate.com.''

Just started yesterday, I don't recall changing anything. I see it with many, but not all, clicks on Slate.

I cannot see any problems resulting from the block. Someone has reported something similar with ie.

ff35.0.1, win 7

-cleared the cache?
-rebooted the PC?
-tried a different browser?

It's probably just checking the expiration date of a security certificate that allows the site to use https instead of http. That's behavior you allow through the app settings. Is it a message from Firefox or from Avast?

OK, this is what I've found out so far. My ISP was having problems at the time all this started and everything works at their end. When I start the computer this morning the firewall (Comodo) popped up saying something was trying to create a new file or directory but it wasn't sure if it was safe and I needed to check it. I blocked it but left the remember my action unchecked for now just in case it is needed it will come back up and I can allow it to run. The file was windows\system32\logfiles\wmi\rtbackup\rtmsmppssession.etl. I'll look into it to see what I find out. As for the network part. I borrowed a friends laptop and plugged the ethernet cable in and there was nothing wrong. So everything is good from cable to the ISP end of things. Thanks and I'll tell you what I find out. So till then happy interneting.

Spybot Search and Destroy has an Immunize option that takes a list of all the potentially harmful sites that they know of and blocks them (by editing your hosts file). It is a convenient way to protect yourself from many of the more common hazards. It does not currently block sandoxon directly, but it may block whatever is linking to them. If after installing it and choosing to Immunize you are still having something blocked by avast that links to that site you could try editing your hosts file yourself... it isn't too hard.

I don't think a user with normal PC experience (and with neither exposure to nor understanding of the depths and bowels of the project) can knowledgeably assess whether or not to do a software update. Even someone with advanced technical knowledge can often not make sense of details gained from only an over-the-fence peek. My advice - accept all updates. When there are cosmetic or unintended hiccups, they're usually detected and fixed in days. For Windows, have restore points so that problems can be rolled back. For browsers, have two or more onboard and current. If one starts acting silly, use another for awhile. As far as differences between browsers? Eh, not really to my eye. They all do the same things the same ways. Some are smaller, some are larger. As with most software, most people don't need or use the bells and whistles so special features don't much matter.

I removed Avast and reloaded it and now the message stays up longer so I an report more detail.

''Web Shield has blocked access to this page because the following certificate revoked:idvisitor.slate.com.''

Yes, yes and yes. Message from Avast, only with Firefox and random places on Slate.

Would using a different browser when you wish to read on the Slate site make the problem go away?

Or, switching from Avast to a different AV?

I got that message, too. Decided it wasn't serious and went to the site for a couple of days, but yesterday when playing a video it crashed FF.

Coincidence?

I think I won't get anymore videos from that site.

ltilton , interesting. I have suspected that the random appearance of the message may coincide with Slate's automatic starting of videos. Haven't been able to demonstrate it yet.

albert - I don't have any automatic starting of videos, I have to start them manually. Which I don't do again on that site.

otoh, my computer seems to find new ways to crash itself every week or so, so it could be coincidence.
